Listening Skills

Listening is a key attribute on which many of our clients place high importance.

There are many aspects to effective communication and one which is often overlooked is the importance of listening. We are often so keen to get our message across or to impart knowledge to others that we forget to listen to their needs, experience and point of view.

This can be particularly the case when interacting with someone more senior and instead of listening we are planning what clever comment we might make. It is easy to get too many steps ahead, and then realise you have been asked a question - but you're not quite sure what it is. Listening actively shows respect for the person and their views.

Salary Survey
The 2015 survey was completed in October 2015. The results are based on data collected via a web link over a period of around 4 weeks in September 2015. Complete responses were received from around 530 individuals with 438 being based in Australia. The results are shown for Australian based actuaries only as the overseas responses covered a range of companies and levels, and were insufficient for meaningful illustration.

Remuneration is based on a wide range of factors, in particular skills, responsibility and performances as well as qualification and experience. We are always happy to discuss your salary and the market so if you would like to benchmark yourself or receive a copy of the survey report please give us a call or email us on info@sklactuarial.com.au and someone will get back to you.
The Year Ahead
With volatile investment markets at the start of the year, uncertainty globally - China, Europe, US elections, our own federal election, potential for tax reform, the ongoing superannuation debate and further comment from APRA on the role of the Appointed Actuary we   anticipate an interesting year ahead.
On the recruitment front we are seeing demand for  actuaries with life insurance pricing experience, for  strong  communication and influencing skills, for adaptability and the desire to  broaden their horizons within a consulting environment.  The future for actuaries to work in the analytics space is also developing.
