SLA's Prison Library Sub-Committee's quarterly book recommendation section in SLAte is an opportunity to consider Canada's justice system, the lived experiences of incarcerated people, and the importance of having accessible resources while incarcerated.

This month's recommendation is Wrongfully Convicted: Guilty Pleas, Imagined Crimes, and What Canada Must Do to Safeguard Justice by Kent Roach.

Heading: President's Report
James Hope Howard has light brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and a short beard. He has black-framed glasses and is wearing a grey collared shirt with a tie and a black sweater vest over top.

Hello everyone,

First things first, on behalf of the entire Saskatchewan Library Association, I want to send our congratulations and well-wishes to the departing Lynn Penner as she steps down from her role as Communications & Research Coordinator to welcome the birth of her first child. Lynn has done amazing work in her time with the SLA office, and played a big part in the preparation and delivery of this year’s Saskatchewan Libraries Conference. All the best, Lynn!

We are also thrilled to welcome Yasmin Dar to the SLA as our new Communications & Research Coordinator; this edition of the SLAte Newsletter that you hold in your hands right now – if you’re reading this on a computer, please gently grip the monitor with your hands so I don’t have to redraft this sentence – is the first issue that she’s put together, and we look forward with excitement to her contributions to come. (She may encounter people calling her ‘the new Lynn’ for a while, though hopefully not for too long; we still get visitors to PNLS Headquarters calling me ‘the new Audrey’ every now and then, and that switchover was about eight years ago now.) Welcome aboard, Yasmin!

Speaking of welcoming, the SLA Mentorship Pilot Program is now open to all SLA Individual Members! Offering both mentor/mentee and peer-to-peer mentorship options, the pilot program is designed both to welcome newer library staff and to help SLA members from all different sectors establish connections throughout our shared provincial library network. More information on the pilot program can be found on our website.

The arrival of September, as always, means that the start of the school year is once again upon us; where on Earth does the time go? I’ve only got four months left now to work on all of the New Year’s resolutions that I’d made back in January – and I don’t even remember what any of them were! One of these years I’ve gotta start writing these things down.

Until next time,

James Hope Howard

SLA President

Children's Writers' Round Robin Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Saskatchewan Children’s Writers’ Round Robin is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a public event and a children's reading contest this fall!

Since its beginning in 1984, members of the Saskatchewan Children's Writers' Round Robin have published more than 200 books. The organization invites you to celebrate its 40th anniversary with them by joining their public event or encouraging students to participate in a reading contest.

The public library event will be held on September 14, 2024 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the Regina Public Library's George Bothwell branch. The event will feature 11 members each giving a 10-minute talk on an aspect of writing that can apply to writing for any age. Stop by to talk to the authors, buy books, and enjoy some cake! The event will also be livestreamed via Zoom for those who cannot attend in person.

The Fly Into Reading! Contest will run from September 14 to November 1, 2024 and is open to all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students in Saskatchewan. Students can enter by reading one of the books published by a Saskatchewan Children's Writers' Round Robin member (many are available in libraries), write or draw a response, and enter online to win. Prizes include books for students and author readings for classrooms, libraries, or home school groups!
