For the first time ever, SLA is offering Family Literacy Day program grants!

Ten $200 grants are now available to libraries to support them as they celebrate and promote Family Literacy Day on January 27, 2023. This year's theme is "Celebrate your Heritage."

The application deadline is December 16, 2022. Applications will be assessed on how well the program aligns with the theme of fostering family literacy.

Grant applications must demonstrate a commitment to:

  • Be inclusive of ability, gender, income, and cultural backgrounds
  • Include activities that promote cultural understanding, respect, community pride, social connections and support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action
  • Literacy and learning
  • Cultural programming, including arts, heritage, multicultural, First Nations and Metis activities
  • Meeting the needs of their community

Welcome to Our New

Board Member

The SLA board and staff extend a warm welcome to Danielle Raymond, who has joined the SLA board as a member at large.

Danielle is a library technician and currently works at the Emma Stewart Resources Centre serving teachers at the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation. She has volunteered on many boards and committees, including the Saskatchewan Association of Library Technicians (SALT).

The SLA board and staff extend many thanks to outgoing member at large Megan Ashcroft. Megan was on the SLA Board from 2020 to 2022. We extend our sincerest thanks for her invaluable service during her member at large tenure.

CFLA's Indigenous Matters Committee Seeking New Members

CFLA's Indigenous Matters Committee is searching for new members. Anyone who is a member of at least one CFLA-FCAB member association (including SLA) is eligible to nominate themselves. Members will serve as subject matter experts, not organization representatives.

Members will be selected with the goal of representing across the Canadian Library landscape, both geographically and across the profession with preference given to librarians of Indigenous ancestry to prioritize Indigenous voices on Indigenous matters.

This committee will normally meet monthly between September and June.

Greetings!

I can't believe it is already December. This month is a time of reflection for me and I am proud to say that SLA has had an amazing year. We had many successful programs and events: One Book One Province (Arab Cooking on a Prairie Homestead), the 2022 Saskatchewan Libraries Conference, Saskatchewan Library Week, and the expansion of our Prison Library Committee's work.

We have also experienced a significant changeover in both our staff and our board, and begun work on a new strategic plan. We will spend a good deal of time in the coming weeks to make this the best document it can be.

Our Conference Planning and Program Committees are doing amazing work preparing for another excellent conference. The call for session proposals just closed and the Conference Program Committee will be working on the selection process. We hope to have a program on the website for you to consider sometime in January. Keep an eye on social media for more information as it becomes available!

We are going into a period of refresh and renewal. I encourage you to sign up and consider joining the board and/or one of the amazing committees that are so engaged in this process. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the board and committees for their commitment and work throughout 2022. I would also like to thank all our staff for the amazing work and support they provide. We will miss Dorothea and Leslie, but we are also very excited to continue working with Lynn, Mary Lou, and Tina.

Finally, I would like to thank our major funders – Sask Lotteries through SaskCulture. We have many funders that support SLA’s amazing work throughout the year, but Sask Lotteries and SaskCulture have been a constant for us. Without their support, we would not be able to do the work that we do.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season.

Copyright Term Extension: FAQ for Canadian Libraries

The term of copyright protection in Canada for many types of works will be changing from 50 years past the year of death of the creator (e.g. author, composer, etc.) to 70 years past the year of death of the creator.

To assist library staff and others working in information management with navigating this change, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is compiling an FAQ. They are asking for submissions of questions in either English or French that library and information professionals may have about the term extension as it relates to library collections, services, systems and training. This includes all public services and forms of collections (e.g. digital, paper, etc.).

The deadline to submit your questions is December 7, 2022.

CFLA Copyright Committee Update

At the October 2022 meeting, the CFLA Copyright Committee discussed the following:

  1. The Committee heard from Impact, CFLA's government relations firm, that the federal government is looking at a limited review of copyright with focused consultations in 2023. Government is aware of library community's positions.
  2. Members of the Committee met with ISED and Heritage officials to discuss the Broadcast Treaty and explained the need for mandatory exceptions/limitations that the library community wished to see in the treaty.
  3. Work continues on finalizing the Committee's new Terms of Reference.
  4. AI and Copyright Working Group completed last position paper on Right to Repair, Interoperability and TPMs.
  5. Work continues with Accessibility Working Group's 'reasonable search;' Crown Copyright; and Copyright Data and Analysis Working Group.
  6. Two members of CFLA Copyright Committee will join a joint CFLA/CULC/CARL working group focusing on issues with trade ebooks in libraries.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.

The Saskatchewan Library Association gratefully acknowledges the support

of our funding agencies.
