Winter Wildlife Awareness
You've probably "herd" of the elk that have been visiting our city.

When recreating outdoors, we have a responsibility to recognize seasonal changes in wildlife behaviors. By following a few tips you can help protect our wildlife, yourself, and your canine companions when recreating in the winter months.

Be winter wildlife aware when recreating by following the tips below.

  • Avoid recreating at dawn and dusk in the winter as this is when wildlife are most active.
  • Make yourself known! Avoid taking wildlife by surprise by attaching small bells to yourself and your pets to give animals a warning of your presence.
  • Keep dogs close and on-leash.
  • Do not feed the wildlife. Doing so can cause the animals to become habituated to humans and lead to more aggressive encounters and disease.
  • Give wildlife space! If you encounter wildlife, DO NOT APPROACH. Stay calm, keep your pet quiet and under control, and give the animal a clear escape route by backing away slowly without taking your eyes off the animal.

2022 Annual Report Now Available
Public Lands 2022 Annual Report is now available!

2022 was filled with many exciting developments for public lands in Salt Lake City.

We're proud of what we've accomplished in 2022 and we're excited to continue enhancing public lands in SLC in 2023.
Rose Park Neighborhood Center Community Garden
Public Lands has been working with Rose Park Neighborhood Center and Wasatch Community Gardens to design a new community garden at the Rose Park Neighborhood Center (754 N 800 W).

This garden will feature fifty community gardening plots and should be open and growing by Spring 2024.
Allen Park Lodge Update
The City has hired a contractor to perform structural stabilization work on the main Allen Lodge at Allen Park. Work is expected to begin the week of February 27th and be completed by early April.

The work will be substantially confined to the interior of the building and will not impact park use, though some users may notice contractor vehicles and a dumpster placed on site.

The structural work in the lodge will have no long-term impacts on the visual and cultural integrity of the building and the purpose is to prevent any additional damage to the lodge while the Adaptive Reuse and Management Plan is underway. Per recommendation of the Friends of Allen Park group, they have received instruction to take note and care to minimize impact to the birds on site.

In addition, the City hired a roofing contractor to begin work on the Allen Lodge roof. Currently, there are holes in the roof of the lodge, causing some damage to the interior of the structure. The Contractor will be removing the current tiles which have exceeded their useful life, and will be upgrading the roof to safeguard and waterproof the lodge for many years to come. More permanent repairs will be made to the roof and structure upon the completion of the Adaptive Reuse and Management Plan.

There will be a public hearing on March 7th and March 21st before the City Council on the plan. The draft plan guides the future improvements and programming of the 17-acre Glendale Regional Park site.

Phase 1 construction is anticipated to begin this summer, and open to the public by April 2024.
