Public Lands Transitions to Electric Lawn Mowers

Public Lands has ordered 6 new zero turn 74" electric lawn mowers that are set to arrive next year. These new mowers will be replacing 6 diesel engine mowers as a clean energy alternative.

Additionally, next year we will also be trading in the majority of our gas push lawn mowers for electric push mowers.

This switch to electric lawn mowers was funded through a Salt Lake City Sustainability funding initiative.

We're excited to implement these changes as a way to decrease our carbon footprint and help our air quality.

New Westside Trail Connections & Amenities Project Update
The New Westside Trail Connections & Amenities project will add new trail connections from Jordan Park (1060 S 900 W) to other surrounding open spaces and public lands. It will also improve the event area and add walking paths within Jordan Park.

Public Lands is completing public engagement for this project at the end of September.

Comments have been gathered at in-person events, such as Public Lands volunteer events, the 900 West Farmer’s Market, and online.

We will be working on the first iteration of construction documents that will be delivered early in October.

Design will be complete by spring 2023, and implementation will begin late spring/summer 2023.
Three Creeks Receiving New Playground
Public Lands is currently working on replacing the temporary log steppingstones at Three Creeks Park (1300 S 900 W) with a permanent nature playground structure.

This playground will provide exciting recreation opportunities for children, and key placemaking along the Jordan River. Installation is anticipated for spring 2023.
Wasatch Hollow Park Off-Leash Dog Policy
Public Lands closed a survey on September 2nd which asked Wasatch Hollow Park (1650 E 1700 S) users and nearby residents to describe current and desired uses in the park and weigh in on the existing off-leash dog policy.

An engagement report was completed to share with Wasatch Hollow Community Council and other interested residents. Public Lands will continue to examine the survey results to determine best next steps for Wasatch Hollow Park.
Jordan River Boat Ramp Art
Public Lands is coordinating with the Arts Council on the installation of art at the four Jordan River boat ramps.

Steel sculptures of 8-feet tall trout will be installed in groups at Riverview, Gadsby, Fisher Mansion, and Glendale.

Installation is currently estimated for mid-October. Learn more about this project here
Bridge to Backman Completion and Open Space Development
The bridge over the Jordan River connecting Backman Elementary (601 N 1500 W) to the nearby nonprofit housing developments is substantially complete. A grand opening was held on September 29th.

Design of the adjacent open space is ongoing and will continue throughout spring 2023. Construction will hopefully be complete by late fall 2023.
Allen Park Adaptive Reuse and Management Plan
Public Lands posted a request for qualification for consultants to submit for the Allen Park Adaptive Reuse and Management Plan.

The period for submission has closed and a City committee is now reviewing proposals for selection. We are hoping to have a consultant selected, under contract and beginning public engagement by the end of October 2022.
Additionally, we are finishing up detailed design for three utility lines to be placed under Allen Park Drive: fire suppression line, irrigation line and a water/sewer line. We are hoping to finish design by the end of October and begin construction in the spring.

We have also received a structural report for the main Allen Lodge and are working towards a roof replacement that will ensure the Lodge remains watertight throughout the winter season.

Allen Park is located at 1328 Allen Park Drive.
Community Parks Wayfinding Signage
Public Lands is finalizing an addendum to our Public Lands signage standard in order to implement bilingual signage in our parks citywide.

We are nearing completion of the bilingual standard and will begin design of individual signage suites in this new standard for 10 parks throughout the City.

We are hoping to have design complete by the end of 2022 with implementation to occur throughout 2023.

Public Lands Repurposes Materials from Smith's Ballpark at Modelport's New RC Track
During the last week of September, Public Lands aided Smith's Ballpark in hauling 6000 tons of field material as they prepare for a new field installation.

Public Lands will be repurposing the material as a top dressing for the new remote control car track at the Modelport (7595 California Ave).

We're excited to reuse this material and keep it from otherwise ending up in the landfill.
