Farm Bureau to Represent Agriculture Industry on San Luis Obispo County COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force
|
|
Amid chaos in the nation's capitol and continued concern over COVID here at home this week, local farmers and ranchers were still busy keeping us fed. San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau member Babé Farms shared a photo from their romanesco harvest underway Thursday in the Santa Maria Valley.
Farm Bureau is among a group of local community and industry leaders comprising the SLO County COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force. The task force met for the first time this week and will work to ensure that high-risk and vulnerable community members have quick and equitable access to the vaccine. The task force includes first responders (Emergency Management Services, the Fire Department, law enforcement), hospitals, bioethicists, community health centers, faith leaders, racial equity groups (NAACP, Promotores), disability service organizations, multilingual organizations, senior citizens, the unhoused, Transitions Mental Health Association, and essential sectors, such as education, agriculture, utilities, and transportation.
Farm Bureau Executive Director Brent Burchett represents agriculture on the task force and said the exact timeline for getting vaccines to ag industry workers is still unknown, but estimates are early March. "The County is moving as quickly as possible to cover the 1A group of frontline healthcare workers and people in long term care facilities," Burchett explained, "and agriculture will be in the very next group called 1B."
San Luis Obispo Tribune published a helpful Q&A article on the vaccine rollout today, including discussion from County Public Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein. “Our two Achilles heels are, one, having all the staff to administer the expanded number of doses and, two, having the vaccine supply,” Borenstein said Wednesday. “With respect to the vaccine supply, we are not able to predict more than a week out how much we’re able to get from the manufacturers. ...”
Follow the latest vaccine information on the County's website. If you are an ag employer, please contact Brent next week at 805-543-3654 or bburchett@slofarmbureau.org to give feedback on the upcoming vaccine process. Farm Bureau needs input on:
- The number of employees you potentially will need to be vaccinated;
- What would be the easiest way to distribute the vaccine to your workers;
- Whether you are considering requiring vaccination as a condition of employment; and
- Whether your employees or contracted workers are currently residing in SLO County or when they will return to the county.

New California Laws Affect Agricultural Operations
Wildfire defense, labor, crop protection and the nearly yearlong COVID-19 pandemic led to a flurry of new laws affecting agriculture, many of which took effect New Year's Day.
In addition, two laws enacted in 2016 will continue to affect pay rates for agricultural employees. As of Jan. 1, the state minimum wage has risen again, to $14 per hour for larger employers—those with 26 or more employees on the payroll at any time during the year—and $13 for smaller employers with 25 or fewer people...

FFCRA and COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave in 2021 - What Happens Now?
The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) expired December 31, 2020. As a reminder, the FFCRA applied to employers with 500 or fewer employees. To fill the gap left by the FFCRA, California enacted its own California COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave, enacted as Labor Code section 248.1. The California COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave also set to expire December 31, 2020, and was to automatically extend if the FFCRA was extended.

California Supreme Court Decision Expands CEQA to Groundwater Well Construction Permits
On August 27, 2020, in Protecting our Water and Environmental Resources v. County of Stanislaus (“Protecting Our Water”), the California Supreme Court held that the county under its existing ordinance could not categorically classify the issuance of groundwater well construction permits as ministerial actions exempt from environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”).
At issue in this case is Stanislaus County’s (County) process for approving well construction applications under its local ordinance, which incorporates state well construction standards.

The Tax Poem
Tax his land, tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Teach him taxes are the rule.
Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirts,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.
Tax his tobacco, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his booze, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.
Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know,
That after taxes, he has no dough.
If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.
Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"
And when he's gone, we won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance TAX!
