Design Team Update on Social Studies
Every instructional area in St. Louis Park Public Schools undergoes a three-year (three phrase) curriculum review and design process. In this process, team members measure previous success and determine next steps within each curricular areas to achieve racial equity transformation in alignment with the strategic plan.
The Racial Equity Purpose Statement of the Social Studies Design Team is to co-create anti-racist communities of belonging where students are seen, heard, and valued through anti-racist pedagogy that celebrates identity and empowers our community to evaluate and
critique systems of oppression.
The design team shared recommendations related to social studies frameworks. Teachers will offer social students instruction and students will experience social students instruction through six frameworks: community, identity, connection, cultural competence, criticality, and grounded in standards and skills. The recommendations also included additional time for school teams to focus on social students; restructuring district-wide professional development to increase collaborative time and support to drive and sustain the work; hiring a social studies district coordinator, offering stipends to a site staff to lead work; and align and collaborate with current systems and structures.
