VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DOCK REMOVAL

We are looking for volunteers to help put away the Yacht Club docks on Saturday, September 16.

We'll start at 9am and should be done by noon. No experience required, and new faces are more than welcome as we tend to rely on the same small group of volunteers each year!

Even if you can only swing by for an hour or two, your help is greatly appreciated. Please let Jason Colbert know if you can make it at jasoncolbert29@gmail.com

TENNIS & PICKLEBALL UPDATES

Pickleball Tourney

We hosted our first-ever, open-doubles SLYC Pickleball tournament last Saturday. It was a great day all around in terms of weather, fun vibes and fantastic pickleball action.

Congratulations to Dave and Bobby Bart for taking home the big jar of pickles after defeating Andrew Rush and John (JC) Craig in the final. Special thanks to Chloe Paradine for keeping everything on track!

Tennis Programming

Tennis lessons and clinics are running through Friday, August 25.

Many of our tennis pros, including Steven Wells, Aidan Quennec, Bobby Bart and a number of the junior pros, are also around and available after this Friday for anyone wanting to do a private lesson or run their own clinic. Please reach out to your pro of choice directly to arrange.

Our 2024 Head Tennis Pro

We're still interested in candidates for SLYC's Head Tennis Pro for Summer 2024. If you have any suggestions for candidates, please forward them to Alex Brooks-Hill and Jody Scotchmer at slycinfo@gmail.com

WEEKEND RACING UPDATE

Our final Weekend Races will take place this weekend! On Saturday, August 26, the Grace Leeming Collins Trophy is on the line, and on Sunday, August 27, it's the Gillespie Cup!

As a fun summer of racing winds down, some acknowledgments and insights:

  • Thank you to our Advisory Group of Gord Welsh, Dave Anderson and Maclain Walsworth for their ideas and suggestions to strengthen Weekend Racing participation and engagement.
  • We are grateful to our Junior Sailing Instructors who commit their weekend time to start the races. Maclain Walsworth was our Head Starter, with Assistants Rocky Walsworth, Sophie Green and Taylor Dalton.
  • There was a significant increase in participation this year, with 15 boats in a number of races. Moving the courses closer to the Yacht Club, shorter races and offering two or three races each day proved successful.
  • More Junior sailors participated this year, and 420s were made available to SLYC members. Unfortunately, there were more race days cancelled this year due to no wind!

And here are some Weekend Racing highlights from the summer:

  • Rob Thompson and Sarah Sackville did an excellent job opening the season with the Annual Alumni Instructor vs Current Instructor Team Racing. The 2023 Instructor Team were the winners and Rob hosted a gathering afterwards.
  • Last Saturday, SLYC Flags were presented to the following race winners:
  • 420s: Peter Dipasquale and Sy Walsworth
  • Optis: Thompson Keenan
  • Lasers: Dave Anderson
  • The Annual Catboat Regatta was successful with nine boats and some very close and competitive racing amid wild winds, capsizing and rudders coming off. Gord Welsh was the 2023 Champion, followed by Matt Ryder and Nick Strzalkowski. Sandy and Jennifer Beatty won the Prettiest Catboat for their new boat that Sandy restored.

Looking ahead, the new Catboat Commodore will be John Heine. A big thank-you to Gord Welsh for his eight years of service.

All sailboats are welcome to join us next year and there is no fee required.

See you on the water!

Tam Matthews

Weekend Race Director
