We are pleased to announce the following eight municipalities achieved Sustainable Maryland Certified status in 2018:

City of Rockville (Montgomery County;
first certified 2012; re-certified 2015) Named our
2018 Sustainability Champion for receiving more points (535) than any other municipality this year.

MEET KELLY PEAKS, OUR NEW CHESAPEAKE CONSERVATION CORPS VOLUNTEER
|
Kelly graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY in May 2018, where she studied Environmental Science with a concentration in policy. She previously interned with the American Meteorological Society where she studied environmental gentrification in Washington, DC. While at EFC, Kelly will work on getting GPS coordinates of pet waste stations for a new app, editing and posting new actions on the Sustainable Maryland website, unveiling a new SM certification tier, working with the Municipal Online Stormwater Training program (MOST) on stormwater webinars, as well as with the Environmental Finance Network on resilience workshops. Her capstone project will focus on working with the Town of North Brentwood on to form a Green team and gain SM certification in 2019. In the future, Kelly hopes to attend graduate school for environmental policy and wants to specifically study climate policy.

GROWING THE COMMUNITY FOREST: SM LEADERSHIP TRAININGS IN NOVEMBER
|
Join us at one of our upcoming Leadership Trainings on the topic of
"Growing the Community Forest"
This year's workshop topic will incorporate examples, stories and tools that will help communities to strengthen and expand local tree canopy. Trees are unique amongst urban infrastructure, in that over time, they appreciate in both value and capacity. Learn about the benefits of a healthy community forest; funding sources and technical assistance available for maintaining and growing your town's tree canopy;
updates on regulations, policies and ordinances at the federal, state and local level; and examples of how to engage residents to support this vital green infrastructure in their neighborhoods.
