PET WASTE MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY: SUMMIT WRAP-UP AND NEXT STEPS

Kurt Becker, Brentwood Green Team and Edward Wyatt, Glenn Dale Citizen's Association, at the Prince George's County Pet Waste Management Summit

More than 60 folks from Green Teams, homeowners' associations, civic groups and non-profit organizations attended our Prince George's County Pet Waste Management Summit in April to learn about the County's initiative to clean up neighborhoods, improve water quality, foster civic pride and improve quality of life. Funded by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT), the Sustainable Maryland program has partnered with Prince George's County Department of the Environment (DoE) and the People for Change Coalition (PFC) to launch this new County initiative to educate residents about the issue of pet waste and install infrastructure that will help communities address the problem. The Summit featured a welcome and overview by D0E's Director Adam Ortiz and Debra Weller; SM staff outlined the problems posed by pet waste and potential solutions available via the County and other organizations; and attendees shared best practices and ongoing challenges within their communities.

"Scoop That Poop!"
Following up on the Summit, our next steps will include targeted pilot projects with the following municipalities: Bladensburg, Brentwood, Cottage City, Edmonston, District Heights, and Landover Hills. SM staff will meet with Green Teams, town managers, elected officials, and residents to prepare customized outreach materials and communications plans. We will also help communities identify sites for the installation of new pet waste stations, which are funded by the CBT grant. Stay tuned for more updates on these local initiatives!
