PET WASTE MANAGEMENT SUMMIT: LESSONS FROM 2017 WILL INFORM THIS YEAR'S WORK WITH 7 NEW MUNICIPALITIES
|
The
2nd Prince George's County Pet Waste Management Summit attracted attendees from municipalities as well as homeowners and citizens associations from across the county. SM staff reported on the first year of our work with
Bladensburg, Brentwood, Cottage City, Edmonston, District Heights, and Landover Hills, where 60 pet waste stations were provided at no cost to the municipalities, and customized outreach materials were distributed to residents via each municipality's communications channels.

Jim Schad, Director of Public Works in Landover Hills, gave an overview of his town's experience in maintaining the pet waste stations and monitoring their usage. Jim also reported that residents were very positive about the new stations, and commended the municipality for being proactive in helping to clean up neighborhoods and improve quality of life.

Chi-Chi Dureke, Bladensburg's Marketing Coordinator, illustrated the variety of ways that the town communicated to residents the importance of managing pet waste, including a weekly e-blast, Facebook, quarterly newsletter, and "Scoop That Poop" banners and magnets.

Laura Noll from the Alice Ferguson Foundation was on hand to offer attendees a partner organization for a variety of stormwater-related outreach events, including their 30th annual
Potomac River Watershed Cleanup.

SM staff look forward to working on the second year of this initiative, funded by the Prince George's County Department of the Environment via a Chesapeake Bay Trust grant, and working with the following municipalities in 2018: Berwyn Heights, Capitol Heights, Colmar Manor, Fairmount Heights, Forest Heights, Hyattsville, and Seat Pleasant.

SUSTAINABLE MARYLAND CERTIFICATION WEBINAR, APRIL 25

 SM staff will host a webinar on
Wednesday, April 25, at 2pm on "Preparing for the 2018 Sustainable Maryland Application". Register

The application deadline is June 30. Attendees will learn about creating an SM account, accessing their Municipal Dashboard, uploading narratives and documents, repsonding to reviewer feedback, special notes on Innovative Demonstration Projects, re-certification guidelines, and submitting your application.

WORKSHOP:
MANAGING YOUR WATER SYSTEM INTO THE FUTURE, MAY 2
|
 This May 2 workshop, sponsored by the
Environmental Finance Center Network, will cover skills and information to help you manage your town or facility's water system successfully now and into the future. You will learn to:
- Have the right people to run your system
- Ensure you get the longest life out of your infrastructure and have a plan to replace it
- Have the money you need for operations and capital
- Communicate these plans and financial needs to decision makers and the public
Who Should Attend: This workshop was designed for water systems serving 10,000 or fewer people (though systems of any size may attend), especially targeting local government systems facing financial challenges. Owners of privately owned systems, consultants and technical assistance providers serving water systems were also invited to attend.
