RECAP: GROWING THE COMMUNITY FOREST WORKSHOP

More than 80 elected officials, county and municipal staff, Green Team members, and foresters attended our recent Growing the Community Forest workshops in Cambridge and Hyattsville earlier this month (unfortunately, our Hagerstown workshop was canceled due to bad weather)

New Carrollton Mayor Duane Rosensberg and Maryland Black Mayors Executive Director Jackie Goodall
|
- Jenny Willoughby, Sustainability Coordinator with the City of Frederick, discussed several city-wide projects that engaged volunteers in creative ways.
- Kolya Braun-Greiner of Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake discussed their Trees for Sacred Spaces program and identifying "green leaders" within congregations.
- Craig Highfield with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay introduced their new Chesapeake Tree Tenders program.
- Brian Roche with the Cambridge Main Street Green Team talked about utilizing volunteers for local tree plantings.
- Suzanne Sullivan, Restoration Manager with Shore Rivers, presented two case studies of volunteer engagement in restoring habitat on the Eastern Shore.
- Earl "Bud" Reaves, Anne Arundel County Forester, spoke about urban tree canopy assessments and plans.
- Dana Puzey, Enterprise Development Director with the Neighborhood Design Center in Hyattsville, spoke about their community engagement projects in underserved communities in Prince George's County.
- Jake Day, Mayor of the City of Salisbury, described how he led a successful effort to preserve a 90 acres old growth woodland within the city's boundaries.
- Jacqueline Goodall, Executive Director of Maryland Black Mayors, related her efforts to "green" the town of Forest Heights during her tenure as Mayor.
- Gary Allen, President of the Maryland Forestry Board Foundation, enumerated the wide range of federal, state and local policies, ordinances and funding sources that can be utilized to protect and expand a community's forest.
- LeeAnn King of the Chesapeake Conservancy demonstrated the new suite of online planning and analysis tools available through their Conservation Innovation Center.
- Krista Heinlen, Urban Research Forester with Davey Tree, walked attendees through the i-Tree online software platform, and how communities can use this tool to map tree canopy.

FREE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WITH MUNICIPAL CARBON FOOTPRINT REPORT ACTION
|
In 2019 Sustainable Maryland will be offering assistance from UMD student volunteers to help a
limited number of towns with populations of less than 10,000 people to create a
Municipal Carbon Footprint report, a baseline of electricity, natural gas and heating oil usage from buildings and fuel usage from vehicles. This report will allow municipalities to set goals for energy efficiency and track their efforts moving forward. Please contact mikeh75@umd.edu or 301-405-7956 if your town is interested in receiving this assistance next year

A Better Maryland Strategies survey
and help the state of Maryland prioritize topics within four categories - Environment, Economic Development, Community Development, Collaboration/Communication - and prioritize strategies within each topic. Input from Green Teams, elected officials, planning boards, and engaged citizens is important in making the state's new development plan as good as it can be!
