WELCOME ABOARD TOWN OF GLEN ECHO!
|
SM welcomes the
Town of Glen Echo
to the program! With a population of 269 residents along the banks of the Potomac River in Montgomery County, Glen Echo is one of the smaller municipalities in Maryland to register and form a Green Team. SM staff met with their new Green Team in May to help launch their efforts. The town already has a history of green initiatives, and is building on that foundation to pursue certification. Current projects include spring plant swap, a 5-K run, an annual town-wide yard sale, newsletter articles about plants and backyard birding, and community-wide traffic calming efforts. The Green Team is planning for future projects, including possibly applying for Tree City USA designation and initiating pet waste management efforts.

CCC VOLUNTEER CAPSTONE: ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR RESTAURANTS
|
During his year with the EFC, Chesapeake Conservation Corps volunteer Marcus Glomset has been working on a project that he thinks will improve restaurant owner knowledge of Maryland's energy-efficiency programs for businesses. Marcus has compiled a comprehensive list of the efficiency improvement programs offered by utility
companies and financed in part through the EmPOWER Maryland program. By packaging and presenting this information in an easy-to-use, clear document available in both English and Spanish, Marcus wants to show restaurant owners the money they could be saving, eventually reducing the energy needs of a high-intensity industry. Our hope at the EFC is that counties applying for Sustainably Maryland certification will use this document in their outreach to local restaurants, to affect targeted change in their communities.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY GRANTS AND GREEN ENERGY LOAN PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
|
The recent Exelon/PHI merger has resulted in a host of energy efficiency programs for Pepco customers and Prince George's County residents. Programs include the Transforming Neighborhood Initiative, the Green Energy Loan Program, the Energy Star Certification and Green Leasing Grant Program, the Sustainable Energy Workforce Development Program, and the Energy Literacy Program.
The
Transforming Neighborhood Initiative is designed to assist Pepco customers that live in nine County neighborhoods with demonstrated need to apply for grants to improve energy efficiency and install roof solar panels.
Prince George County is also working with lenders to guarantee loans of up to $250,000 for commercial or industrial building efficiency improvements.
The
Energy Star Certification and
Green Leasing Program is available to commercial and industrial Pepco customers to perform energy and water retrofits, and to assist in green leasing.
The
Sustainable Energy Workforce Development Program helps to train County residents in energy efficiency fields, teaching valuable and high marketable skills.
The Energy Literacy Program is an initiative started to educate 3rd-5th graders on energy careers, giving them the foundation they need to excel in STEM.

"
I have heard it said that the stone age did not end because we ran out of stones. We don't have to wait to run out of coal and oil to end the age of fossil fuels. We need to invest in the future, not the past
