SM welcomes the Town of Goldsboro (Caroline County)
to the program! With a population of 238 residents, Goldsboro is yet another smaller municipality in Maryland that decided to form a Green Team and coordinate their sustainability actions under the Sustainable Maryland umbrella. SM staff met with their new Green Team in June to help launch their first Green Team meeting.
Current projects include creating a Green Team Action Plan and conducting an energy audit of town hall. Future plans include organizing a community 5-K run, adopting a new pet waste ordinance, and launching a new farmers market.
We look forward to working with the Goldsboro Green Team!

TOPIC: GROWING THE COMMUNITY FOREST

The Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland will host Sustainable Maryland's annual Leadership Training workshops in November. This training series fosters leadership skills to engage diverse stakeholders, reduce contention and garner support for sustainability initiatives.
This year's workshop topic, GROWING THE COMMUNITY FOREST, will incorporate examples, stories and tools that will help communities to strengthen and expand local tree canopy. Trees are unique amongst urban infrastructure, in that over time, they appreciate in both value and capacity. Learn about the benefits of a healthy community forest; funding sources and technical assistance available for maintaining and growing your town's tree canopy; and examples of how to engage residents to support this vital green infrastructure in their neighborhoods.

Decades of research shows that the urban forests in our backyards deliver measurable economic benefits, reduce strain on hard infrastructure, and improve people's health and quality of life.

an evolving, free tool that provides practical case studies, research, data and a toolkit on how urban forests can help make cities and communities more sustainable and (i.e., bolster stormwater management plans, improve pedestrian safety etc.) and healthier for all residents - big and small.
The purpose of the Vibrant Cities Lab is to help change makers, visionaries, business owners, and on-the-ground practitioners create and maintain places where people want to live, work, learn, and play.
There is no cost to access the Vibrant Cities Lab website. It is a joint project of the U.S. Forest Service, American Forests and the National Association of Regional Councils that merges the latest research with best practices for implementing green infrastructure projects in your community.

$500,000 AVAILABLE FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROJECTS FROM MARYLAND SMART ENERGY COMMUNITIES GRANTS
|
Funding for the Maryland Smart Energy Communities (MSEC) program for the fiscal year 2019 is now available. The budget is intended to be $500,000 to be divided between new communities and existing MSEC communities. In the Fiscal Year 2019,
funding Is ONLY available for energy-efficiency projects. SM staff assist the Maryland Energy Administration with these grants. If your municipality has never applied for these grants, please contact us immediately at [email protected] or 301-405-7956 to discuss possible projects for an application. First time applicants have an advantage in receiving funding.
Application deadline is October 10.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY DOE HOSTS ANNUAL GREEN SUMMIT ON OCTOBER 5
|
Join Prince George's County Department of the Environment, partners and presenters for a FREE, one-day Green Summit! Engage, promote and empower action for tackling various environmental and health issues in the County.
The event will be held from 9:00am-1:30pm, on Friday, October 5, at the Kentland Community Center, 2413 Pinebrook Avenue, in Landover.
Topics for presentations and workshops include:
- Curbside composting and how to build your own composting bin
- Zero waste and waste diversion including upcycling and how to do a home trash audit
- The Year of the Anacostia campaign
- Our Summer Youth Enrichment Program
- Stormwater Best Management Practices, including installing a Rain Barrel at home and caring for trees
- Clean and green housekeeping tips
- Preparation for adopting a pet, including how to make natural pet treats and the importance of "Scoop that Poop"
- Tackling litter and illegal dumping in the County
- The Chesapeake Bay, climate change and the EPA
