Dear SMA Community,
September has arrived and our 2nd Annual Fall Festival is coming up soon! Co-Chairs Leyla Chavez, Celeste Shamel Kehoe, and their team have been working hard to bring this fun event to the SMA community. All are welcome to join us for an evening of fun, food, and community.
Next Wednesday, 9/13 we will have our first school Mass at 8:30am and 2023-2024 Student Council Induction Ceremony following the final blessing. Please join us! On Catechetical Sunday, 9/17 the Academy is partnering with Faith Formation at the 9am Mass. Students in Dress Uniform will receive a "FREE DRESS" coupon from their teacher to be used on Monday, 9/18. If your child would like to greet our parishioners before Mass, please come to the front doors of the church at 8:45 a.m. in Dress Uniform.
Next week we are welcoming Emily Lucier as our P.E. Teacher. Please see Emily's bio below. We are truly blessed to welcome such a talented teacher to our staff! Ms. Lucier will also be assisting with the Learning Support program.
Next week we begin our Renaissance Star Testing fall window for grades 1-8. As usual, please make sure your child gets enough rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and understands this assessment is a window into their understanding of grade level standards. Showing what they know will help teachers create small groups, adjust instruction, and maintain data to show progress throughout the school year.
Finally, thank you for your support driving carefully through the parking lot, ensuring your child(ren) gets to school on time, volunteering at lunch or in the parking lot, and allowing students and staff time to settle in to a wonderful new school year!
Blessings,
Jennifer Miller
Principal

Hello my name is Emily Lucier and I am very excited to teach Physical Education at St. Martin’s! I recently obtained my teaching credential in PE from SDSU and I also have a B.S. in Kinesiology as well! Before moving to San Diego, I went to Catholic School (since preschool) in San Luis Obispo! I love to cook, read and workout in my free time, as well as coach and play basketball!

STEM CARD CHALLENGE
Students in grade 3 were challenged to work as a team to design the tallest tower using only index cards. Students planned out their designs, predicted how many cards they would use, and reflected upon their challenges. Student's explored how to engineer their towers and realized that folding and bending the cards provided more support and stability. They came up with a variety of designs and strategies for their free standing tower. We then named, measured, and reflected on what we would do next time or advice we would give to someone doing the same experiment.

SOLAR ENERGY
The 8th grade scientists have been diving into the fascinating world of energy forms, and we're eager to keep you in the loop about their incredible journey. Students experimented with solar panels and discovered how to power fans using the energy from the sun. In a fun and interactive activity, students generated energy through hand-cranking to operate fans. This allowed them to understand the concept of mechanical energy and its practical applications.
