The U.N. has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

A total solar eclipse will take place on Aug. 21, 2017.

According to the Chinese calendar, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. 

Numerology for the year equals "1" by adding the numbers:  2+0+1+7 = 10 =  1+0 = 1. One  marks the beginning of a new cycle, a great time to set SMART goals.

SMART Goals for New Year
The first step of successfully reaching a goal or New Year's resolution beings with writing it as a SMART statement:  Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. 

The consulting company for which I work requires us to set SMART goals with a mentor, provide mid-year progress, and report final status on at the end of the calendar year. Doing this for a decade has taught me to ensure I write a SMART goal correctly as the right first step.

Face-to-Face with Manatee
Snorkeling with Manatees
Top item on my bucket list was snorkeling with the manatees in Florida. After dreaming about it for years, I finally made the journey Christmas week, 2016, to Crystal River, Florida. 

The nickname "gentle giants" perfectly describes these curious creatures. Their tails look like mermaids. Their faces resemble walruses, but without the tusks. I  recommend this journey to those who enjoy swimming and meeting new aquatic friends.

Fun Facts About the Author
The one thing I like least about January is the sudden increase in the number of people at the gym. I call them "resolutionaries" because they've set a New Year's resolution for fitness and thus crowd the gym starting January 2. The number of people going to the gym decreases monthly, especially with warmer weather and longer daylight. Then the "resolutionaries" crowd the biking and hiking trails. What's a woman to do for a quiet workout?

Resolutions to Help my Parents

In school today, my Communication Arts teacher gave us an assignment to write our New Year's Resolutions on what we would do to make the world a better place for our parents or guardians. I thought it was a nuke-odd request, since parents or guardians are supposed to make the world a better place for their kids. I wondered who switched the rules.

Certainly I want to help my parents. I know Mom and Dad love me, even though they don't really get why I'm so into stars, aliens, science fiction, and unicorns. Dad totally isn't into my ballet dancing. He goes to my recitals, but sometimes he takes naps during them. Mom fusses at him about snoring in the middle of the performance. Keeping all that in mind, here are my New Year's resolutions on how to make life in Virginia Beach better for them.
