The Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club strives to be the premier cycling club in the Sarasota region. We will foster a vibrant and inclusive environment where members of all ages and abilities can enjoy the sport, build friendships, increase their cycling knowledge and skills, and be great stewards within our community.

A Message from SMBC President Don Stuart

Dear Members:

Welcome to 2026 with SMBC!

I am Don Stuart, a father of triplets, and an avid bicycling enthusiast. I just returned from the SMBC trip circling Lake Okeechobee which reminded me of all the things that make our club great: a focus on community, safety, fun, and recreation. This trip was organized by Jim Haley, Ken Sanders, and their wonderful wives, Ruth Ann and Maggie.

Our club is very special to me and our members, but it wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our new board highlighted below, all our members, our invaluable ride leaders, and the volunteers that make this club extraordinary. I would like to thank departing board members: John Harkey, Brian Dailey, Stephanie Garrison, Ken Nelson, and Sara Reibman for their years of service, as well as returning board member, Rich Josephson. We do our very best to provide a wide array of programs, activities, training, fun and opportunities for involvement.

Looking ahead, there are rides every day of the week, social activities, the LWR Farmers’ Market information table, ride leader training, technical skills training including Ride with GPS webinars, community rides like Tour de Parks, and numerous youth rodeos that give back to our community. It is truly a wonderful club!

The way you can help right now is to understand how new people learn of and are attracted to SMBC. New members are often concerned that they don’t know anyone, that the ride speed may not be right for them, or don’t have experience riding with a group. Primarily it’s through our website and through you, our everyday ambassadors, who can meet, invite, and encourage bicyclists to join and become involved with our club. We can all help SMBC continue to be the premier bicycling club in the Sarasota-Manatee area! Let’s have a great and safe year!

YOUR NEW BOARD of DIRECTORS

In addition to our new president, we have one member returning with EIGHT new members! Best wishes to them all! Give them your support!!

Rich Josephson

Vice-President

Though I was SMBC Safety officer in 2025, my safety journey began in 1973, when I won my high school driver’s ed award, “The Safe Driver of the Year.” Did zip for my high school dating life.

Valerie Paoloemilio

Treasurer

My only claim to cycling fame was riding the 24 Hours of Michigan Ultramarathon with my husband on a tandem. We did 372 miles and won first place for coed tandem!

Pat Morris

Secretary

I golf regularly and I love cats! I have a wonderful chubby cat, Spencer, who is the perfect gentleman.

Susan Biller

Membership

I enjoy reading. Historical fiction and mystery light novels are some of the genres I read. I also watch way too many Britbox and Acorn detective/mystery programs. I also drink way too much coffee!

Eric Puetz

Webmaster

In my downtime, I enjoy the finer things: a lukewarm glass of week-old eggnog and the thrill of cleaning out the vegetable drawer.

Emmanuel Charron

Ride Leader (RL) Captain

Love riding solo with SMBC, but tandem riding with my wife is also lots of fun.

Ask Emmanuel about any ride issues!

Safety tip - When road cycling, knowing what's behind you is as important as what's in front of you.

RIDE WITH GPS CLASSES

KNOW THE ROUTE when you ride! It's important.

Bob Trencheny has arranged two webinars for SMBC members so we can all learn how to use Ride with GPS. It will be taught by actual RWGPS teachers!! They will be on February 19 and 26 at 4:00PM.

The first class will cover the "nuts and bolts" of signing up, connecting, benefits and using RWGPS on your phone or bike computer. This session will last 45-60 minutes plus a Q&A session. This is "app-based," so members should have the RWGPS app on their phone or tablet to follow along.

The second class will focus on route building & editing, and will provide the basics to get members started. This session will last 60-75 minutes plus Q&A.

Both sessions are open to all members. Watch for Bob's email to sign up.

RIDE LEADER CLASSES

We need more certified leaders to keep our club rolling safely! Whether you want to lead or just improve your cycling IQ, join us for this essential training if you want:

  • to lead official club rides.
  • to refresh your knowledge of Florida & club safety guidelines.
  • to acquire better group riding knowledge.

E-Bikes are a very hot topic across the state. Please read Eugene Rider's article E-Bikes & SMBC: Understanding the Rules, the Benefits, and the Path Forward. It's a great article!!

250th ANNIVERSARY JERSEYS

Member Jim Halay has worked with Primal to create a 250th anniversary of the U.S. club jersey. Purchase before March 16. You'll pick up your jerseys at a local bike shop by May 8.

The SMBC Third Annual Winter Golf Outing will be held again at Peridia Golf & Country Club, a premier executive 18-hole golf course. The event was created to promote a fun activity where club members can get to know each other while off their bicycles.
