A Message from our President John Harkey

Greetings SMBC members,

Last year a focus group met to discuss the future of SMBC. The board discussed the group’s output at our December and February board meetings. Several mission-critical elements were chosen for the club to prioritize. The following list reflects the thoughts of both the focus group and board.

• Develop a club vision statement.

• Fill open volunteer roles (Ride Leader Captain, CycleFest coordinators)

• CycleFest: Get members more involved in the planning process early on.

• Create a volunteer pool.

• Develop and send out a survey to all members to solicit strategic input.

• Grow membership. Gain insight as to why approximately 220 members did not renew their memberships in 2024. A new member ride with lunch is being planned.

• Develop new routes on roads with bike paths.

• Review donations policy.

• Increase number of social rides. Rather than name a chair for this activity, we have chosen to approach a small number of members who would be willing to plan a simple social event in the area of their rides. An email to about a dozen ride leaders was sent last week to solicit ideas.

• Explore creative ride leader incentives beyond ride leader jerseys.

I am very excited with the energy of our new board and am very grateful for the time that the focus group participants dedicated to our club during a busy December.

Fellow Cyclists:

I have compiled a few things that might be of interest, that are scanned into a pdf file for easy reading. Reports

1) Sarasota/Manatee MPO High Injury Network (report and map)

2) Florida Bike Association Legislative Update (What are they doing for us?)

3) Report on the Nathan Benderson Park Connector

I also received a report that the construction on Bourneside between I-70 and The Masters Avenue should be completed early in March. Construction closing Greenbrook Blvd will begin in April; no traffic will be permitted between SR70 and Skip Jack Loop.

I also was honored to be the Vice Chair of the CTST MPO Committee. Danny Williams is the Chair and also an avid Cyclist.

Florida Bicycle Association at the National Bike Summit & Lobby Day

The Florida Bicycle Association is once again taking Florida’s voice to the national stage at the National Bike Summit and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. from March 11-13. This annual event, hosted by the League of American Bicyclists, brings together advocates, transportation leaders, and policymakers from across the country to advance bicycling-friendly initiatives.

Representing Florida Bicycle this year is Board Member Rich Garrett, who will participate in discussions on best practices, innovative programs, and policies that promote safer streets and stronger bicycle networks. He will also take part in Lobby Day, advocating for congressional support of legislation that improves conditions for people who bicycle nationwide.

Rich will be joined by Florida Bicycle member Ed Fendley, who also serves on the League of American Bicyclists' board, and Yasmin Al-Moghrabi, a Young Safety Road Leader and Ph.D. candidate in Transportation Engineering at Florida International University. Together, they will ensure Florida is well represented in key national discussions on bicycling policy and safety.

Rich will bring back key insights and inspiration to share with our members and partners, helping strengthen our advocacy efforts across Florida. Stay tuned for updates on what we learn and how you can take action to support a more bike-friendly future!
