Wishing you good times, good cheer
and a memorable new year.
All of us here at St Mary's Community Preschool want to thank you
for your support and loyalty this past year and decade. The New Year will bring changes to St. Mary's Preschool. We have been blessed for the past 9 years to have had a Pre-K classroom. Due to the addition of a full day Pre-K program at the Tuxedo Public School District, starting in September, we will no longer be able to offer a Pre-K program at St. Mary's. We will, however, be implementing a robust Two year old and Three year old program for the 2020 - 2021 school year. Registration forms are now available online at stmtux.org/preschool.
Preschool Two Day
Happy New Year and Happy New Decade!

Letters L, M, and N were the letters of the month for January. The twos learned the sound each letter makes.  L makes a "L" sound as in Lizard, M makes a "Mmm" sound as in Mouse, and N makes a "Nnn" sound as in Net. The twos were also introduced to the colors Black and White, the shape Hexagon, and the number 5. The children learned a Hexagon has six sides and we hold up one hand with 5 fingers to show the number 5.

The twos created a Lamb for the letter L, a Moose for the letter M, and a bird's Nest for the letter N. Our twos also created a Penguin from the shape hexagon, laced a letter L, and painted with white paint on black paper with Legos. We read If You Give A Moose A Muffin by Laura Joffe Numberoff and made Noodle Necklaces, which help to work on our fine motor skills.

For Chapel, Father Rick read May I See The King by Vince and Julie Daubenspeck and Lunch for a Bunch by Howard Goldthwaite. Father Rick taught the children that all things are possible with God and explained how Jesus fed 5,000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and two fish. Father Rick also told the children how God always provides our needs.

The twos really enjoy showing their show-and-tell items. Some of the items the children brought in were an Anna doll for the letter A, a Ball and a toy Bus for the letter B, stuffed toy Cats for the Letter C, a stuffed toy Dog for the letter D, an Elmo toy for the letter E, and a toy Fish for the letter F. It is a pleasure to see our twos become more self-confident and verbally expressive when exhibiting their show-and-tell.

As we are now in the middle of the school year, it has shaped up to be an exciting and successful year thus far!

Preschool Three Day
With the excitement of Christmas behind us, we welcomed the new year with a smile. The students are learning the days of the week, months of the year, and practicing patterns and recognizing numbers as we discuss our calendar during morning meeting each day.

In January, we focused on learning the letters L, M and N along with their clue words and sounds. We created a letter craft each week: L is for ladybug, M is for moose, and N is for night.

Our learning centered around germs and snowmen. The books we read and activities we completed lend themselves to learning about those subjects. The students met Sneezy, our spray bottle filled with scented water with a face attached to it. Her nose is the nozzle. The students learned about a time when Sneezy went to school with a cold and sneezed all over everything and everyone. In the story, after she sneezes on everyone in the class, she learned to cover her cough and her sneeze with a tissue or her arm. In order to learn more about germs and how they spread, the students were invited to shake Ms. Amanda’s hand, which were covered with “germs” (green glitter). The students watched as the green glitter germs spread from student to student and everything they touched. They also discovered that when they washed their hands well the germs went away. We also read books and created crafts of snowmen. The students made their own snow with conditioner and baking soda and shaped the snow into snowmen. We also used puffy paint to create a melted snowman.

In Readiness and Writing, the students learned to form the letters D, P, B, R, and K as well as the numbers 7 and 8.

In Language and Literacy, the students learned to differentiate between letters, words, and sentences. We focused on following directions, as well as book parts, as we read our themed books. The students completed their find and color worksheets and practiced building their names throughout the month.

In Math, we used objects to practice counting. We worked on identifying ordinal numbers and learning position words, such as above, below, beside, behind, in front of, on top of, and under. We also learned to describe shapes using the different attributes such as color, size, and shape.

Preschool Five Day
With the holidays behind us, we look forward to continuing the progress and success we had in 2019. In January, the PreK class accomplished a lot:

Word Time: We finished our chapter on Health and started a new chapter - Earth. With the help of Squawker, the children learn the pronunciation, spelling, and definition of words to build their vocabulary.

Penmanship: The students used their books to complete their Center Starting Capitals. Then, they were introduced to lowercase letters.

Math: Our chapter is Geometry. It is important that children understand top, middle, and bottom so they can describe position in Geometry. By using their 4 Squares More Squares to build a picture, they explain where pieces should go. They also used their Tag Bags and colored blocks to describe position using above and below, over and under. Children learn to distinguish between left and right by shaking hands while listening to the "Hello Song". They used their Mix and Make Shapes to sort by sides and corners. We completed our I Know My Numbers #5 booklets.

Language and Literacy: We completed the chapter, Concepts About Print, learning to recognize the different characteristics of letters, words, and sentences. Using their name plates, children learn to identify their names and the names of their classmates. We also learned to recognize important signs in our world. We started a new chapter - Comprehension. Students learn to make predictions about a book by looking at the pictures and illustrations on the cover. Using our Line It Up Story Cards, children identify the beginning, middle, and end of a story.

PATHS: The lessons continue to help children identify, understand, and discuss feelings and their causes. We introduced key social and emotional concepts like the "turtle" technique that will lay the foundation for the development of self-control.

Chapel: Father Rick stops by on Fridays to read us a bible story, sing songs, and pray.

A big thank you to all the parents that participated in our pajama drive for children in need.

All classes joined together to make a wonderful hallway craft in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

God bless everyone and Happy New Year!!
