A Note from Our Executive Director, Bonnie Elward
|
|
Dear Friends,
I hope this newsletter finds you happy, healthy, and looking forward to summer fun. This has been a big month for SMCR as we presented three new events. Dine and Design, "A Night on Broadway", and "May the Fourth Be with You" Star Wars themed dance, all enabled our members, friends, and families to celebrate the arts, music, and, most importantly, each other. Each free, inclusive evening was filled with laughter, friendship, and comradery. Our goal is to continue to expand our offerings to appeal to the interests of our members. We welcome your suggestions.
On another note, we are still accepting teams and vendors for our Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival. Gather your friends and family and join us on August 18
th
for a day of entertainment and friendly competition. This newsletter features one of last year's winning teams, The Centurions, a team sponsored by Sabre Systems, Inc. and Century 21 New Millennium. We are thrilled to have so many teams returning for their 2nd and 3rd year and look forward to welcoming new teams as well! We are counting the days until we can all yell, "Paddles up!"
In Gratitude,
Bonnie

Celebrating Our Recent Events

Audience members and performers from "A Night on Broadway" join together for a group photo.

On May 17th, Cedar Point Federal Credit Union helped to coordinate and sponsor a very special performance by The Newtowne Players at Three Notch Theatre in Lexington Park. Audience members enjoyed
a private showing of the theatre company's performance of "A Night on Broadway". Those in attendance even had a chance to join cast members onstage to sing and dance. This performance was so popular that we are hoping to schedule another soon! Stay tuned!

SMCR's Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival
What is it?
|
|
|
SMCR's Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival is an island-wide, admission-free event with food, vendors, entertainment and activities. At the heart of the festival are the heart-pumping dragon boat races. Groups of friends, families, businesses, and community organizations form teams and race in 40-foot dragon boats each with their own drummer keeping cadence.

Not only do teams compete for the fastest time, but they also compete for Best Tent Decorations, Best Team Costumes, and, the highly coveted award, Most Funds Raised. Team Spotlight-The Centurions
|
|
Sabre Systems, Inc. and Century 21 New Millennium
|
|
In 2017, Sabre Systems, Inc. and Century 21 New Millennium teamed up for a winning experience. Led by team captain, Lee Woodfin, their team, the Centurions, was one of the top three finishers of the 2017 race.
Glen Ives, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sabre Systems, Inc. and, SMCR Board of Directors member, answered a few questions about Team Centurions.
Glen said that Sabre Systems and Century 21 New Millennium joined together to form a team to raise money for a great cause in a fun and positive way.
The best part of the experience Glen said was "making new friends and getting together with old friends, especially those who were part of our boat crew, and all the many volunteers who helped and participated … and knowing our efforts and teamwork are going to help a wonderful organization and cause."
He added that it was "just amazing to see how this event has grown into such a fun, healthy and so successful endeavor … everyone involved is just full of love and devotion for our community and especially for those with developmental differences who need our help and support … it’s a true honor to be a small part of it all!"
We want to say thank you to Sabre Systems, Inc .and Century 21 New Millennium for their participation and support! We are thrilled that the Centurions are returning in 2018 and we wish them the best of luck!
