Colleagues,
As we move into December, I want to wish you and your family good health and joy throughout the holiday season and coming new year. I am grateful for all that you do in service to our community and extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.
Reflecting back on this past year, it has been my privilege to serve as your SMLMA president. This is the organization’s first year as the newly merged Sonoma-Mendocino-Lake Medical Association with an expanded tri-county service area. It’s been inspiring to see the incredible reach of our organization and the work that we do.
Participation in public health initiatives for the COVID-19, mpox, influenza, and RSV outbreaks was a top priority in 2022. Additionally, the SMLMA supported a plethora of programs and events, including efforts to recruit and retain physicians to Sonoma County through SMLMA-sponsored programs with our local Family Medicine residencies at Sutter, Kaiser Permanente, and the newest residency program at Adventist Health.

FROM OUR COUNTY HEALTH OFFICER

Sundari Mase, MD, MPH
The arrival of the fall and winter holidays is often accompanied by an increase in respiratory illnesses spread by airborne viruses, and this year is no exception. We are experiencing an increase in influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19 cases in Sonoma County.
We are currently seeing more than 8 new COVID-19 cases per day per 100,000 residents—the most in two months—with a test positivity rate around 7%. Thankfully, we have gone more than six weeks without a COVID-19 fatality in Sonoma County, the longest period without a pandemic-related death since the summer of 2020. It is a testament to the quality of care provided by the healthcare professionals in Sonoma County and our joint efforts to distribute the vaccine to every corner of our community, with an emphasis on people who face the highest risks.
