Physician Wellness Leadership Awards Dinner

TBA Spring 2024

President's Perspective

I have always wanted to be a physician. I really cannot imagine doing anything else. Like my fellow SMLMA members, I have a passion to help those with healthcare needs.

Every physician needs to do something to make healthcare better. There is always an opportunity to do this. And there is an increased opportunity to do this when you are supported by your colleagues in a group such as our local medical association. The medical association is a pathway giving members multiple ways to engage in our community, stay informed on key issues, share concerns and opinions, and enrich physician’s care.

We have immediate, tremendous challenges ahead. We are facing significant physician shortages and an increasing wave of new patients; we have an onslaught of increasing documentation and regulatory requirements; and we are facing a year of historical increases in inflation, taxes, malpractice rates, and demands that reduce our efficiency and the quality of care we are able to provide.

I encourage you to look for strength from your colleagues. The medical association is here to support its members in multiple

NEWS AND SMLMA EVENTS

Dr. Tanya Phares named Sonoma County health officer

Dr. Tanya Phares, an experienced physician executive from Reno, Nevada, who has held several leadership roles in health care, was appointed Sonoma County’s new health officer by the Board of Supervisors in November.

Previously a preventative medicine consultant based in Reno, Dr. Phares has served as chief medical officer for St. Mary’s Health Network, chief medical director of a health plan and medical director for a vaccine clinic in Nevada. Department of Health Services Director Tina Rivera said Dr. Phares emerged as the top candidate after a nationwide search. See details on the Department of Health Services website.

Please join SMLMA in welcoming Dr. Phares. She will represent Sonoma County Health Services on the SMLMA Board of Directors, and we look forward to working with her.

Wellness Leadership Awards dinner postponed

After much consideration, SMLMA and SFMMS have decided to move the Wellness Awards dinner from Jan. 24 to a later date in spring 2024. We received considerable feedback that more time was needed to participate in this important program.

Thank you to those who submitted nominations and sponsorship requests, which we will continue to accept. Please watch for the new schedule and plan to help us acknowledge and celebrate achievements in physician wellness work!
