From the Director's Desk

Hello, February! I hope you are staying warm and dry. I personally am already counting the days until the warm, sunny days of spring.

CMA Leg Day: While we look forward to warmer weather, I invite you to connect with your colleagues and advocate for the practice of medicine by joining SMLMA on a road trip to Sacramento to meet with our legislative representatives on April 10. [See details below.]

Our new Public Health Officers: If you haven't yet met them, you will have an opportunity to get acquainted during SMLMA's new monthly afternoon Zoom series that begin in March. [See details below.]

Wellness EXPO and reception Friday, April 26: Great opportunity for networking with colleagues from Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, and Marin counties. Explore wellness services and products in a fun, lively atmosphere. If you know a provider/service that should be considered for the wellness EXPO, please have them reach out to me via call or email. My contact info is in my signature line below.

Coming to the EXPO from Mendocino or Lake County? Book a room using our discount at the Sheraton in Petaluma. Following the vendor EXPO and reception, join us for a "Food as Medicine" dinner and discover all the extraordinary efforts being made in supporting physician wellness by local providers as we honor their contributions.

And a heartfelt plea from me — we still need your nominations for outstanding work in physician wellness! Please take a few minutes to acknowledge your deserving colleagues or organizational programs. Send us your nominations by Friday, March 1. [Award categories and event details below.]

CMA is aggressively working to reverse the 3.4% Medicare payment cut that took effect on Jan. 1, 2024. I urge you to continue reaching out to our Representatives to stop the cut. We need a high volume of physicians to send emails and call. CMA hopes to include a stop in the March 8 bill that Congress must pass to keep the government funded. Click to read the Jan. 24 CMA Federal Update.

As always, the SMLMA Team is here for YOU. Please contact me anytime at 707-620-0808 or exec@smlma.org.

SUBMIT YOUR TOPICS FOR THE FORUM

A conversation with Sonoma and Lake County Public Health Officers

Our new Public Health Officers, Dr. Tanya Phares (Sonoma County) and Dr. Noemi Doohan (Lake County), invite you to get acquainted during a series of town hall-style virtual forums exclusively for physicians and medical professionals. You are also invited to submit topic requests and questions in advance (e.g., role of Public Health Officers, drug overdoses, chronic disease prevention — anything you would like to know more about).

Please register and submit your topics ASAP so we can gauge interest in the series. A high level of interest will mean more frequent forums; both officers are happy to meet as often as participation merits. There are many areas to cover! Did you know that California law gives local health officers 171 separate, distinct duties? See Health Officers Association Guide for Counties for more information. You may also find ideas for discussion in 10 Essential Public Health Services from the Public Health Accreditation Board.

Thursday, March 14, 2024 • 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

You must register to attend the Zoom conversation

Link will be sent following registration.
