Dear Colleagues:

Happy March! Spring has sprung, or at least seems to be on the way. We’re seeing it getting lighter every day, wildflowers are blooming, and COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations are declining. We’re certainly not out of the pandemic woods yet, but we can take some deep breaths and look ahead with renewed hope as we ease our way into a new “normal.”

We start the official countdown to daylight saving time, which begins on Sunday, March 13. Just 12 more days. Set an alarm to move your clocks and get ready to enjoy a bit more daylight!

We are excited to report that the SMLMA is hosting our first in-person event on Friday, March 18, with Sunset on the Patio at Paradise Ridge WineryJoin us for a lovely evening on the beautifully restored winery patio. Take a walk through the outdoor art exhibition with colleagues and new friends. Our souls have missed these unexpected moments and we hope you feel, as we do, that it is time we connected as a community again. This is a beautiful location, and we hope to see you there! (See details below.)

In this newsletter, you will find content about pediatric vaccinations and anti-viral therapeutics, invitations to participate in CDPH and CDC surveys, and an update on Medi-Cal Rx prior auth requirements. We’re in a world of constant change, and I encourage you to participate in CMA’s Legislative Day on April 19 in Sacramento, and to review the important information on the 2022 MICRA protection campaign. The launch of the Bay Area Clinician Wellness Collaborative in April is an exciting development that is shaping up well. Please consider joining the collaborative as a voice for your practice or group. More voices at the table will benefit physicians from across the Bay Area.

March is national Women’s History Month, and the 2022 theme is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” We give a shoutout of recognition to all of the dedicated women clinicians and caregivers who ceaselessly serve our community. A heartfelt “thank you” for all you do! Fun fact: Did you know that Women's History Month actually began in Sonoma County?

Last week Sonoma County administered its millionth COVID-19 vaccine. A shoutout to Dr. Brian Prystowsky, who spearheaded our “I’m In!” campaign. Here in Sonoma County, we’re 80% vaccinated, and this could not have happened without our community efforts. Part of this effort has been the leadership our Sonoma County Public Health Officer, Dr. Sundari Mase.

For many of us, these last two years have been difficult, to put it mildly. Dr. Mase stepped into the role of Public Health Officer just as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning early in 2020. She has issued critical mandates to keep Sonoma County safe, despite the unpopularity of the mandates. Dr. Mase faced death threats and public scrutiny as she continued to advocate for the health of Sonoma County. She voluntarily disclosed her DUI transgression to the appropriate leadership and has been transparent about her personal challenges. This very personal issue has now become a very public issue calling into question her competency in continuing in her role as our Public Health Officer. Please consider supporting our colleague through this personal challenge.

As always, thank you for all you do to care for our communities. We are grateful for our incredible SMLMA members. If there is anything we can do to assist you, please contact the SMLMA Team at 707-525-4375 or smlma@smlma.org.

Gratefully,
Patricia Hiserote, DO, MSHPE, FAAFP
