From Ms. Hunter
Hello Shaker Middle School Families,

Thank you to the families who attended Tour Your Schools Day at the Middle School. Our SMS student ambassadors gave tours and confidently answered questions about International Baccalaureate, middle school structure, extra and co-curricular activities, new student orientations, and more.

On Monday, our orchestra students had the opportunity to learn from Mr. Wong, a member of the Cavani Quartet and D’Addario consultant. Mr. Wong spoke to our students about the history of strings, the technological innovation of stringed instruments, and performed a Bach piece. Thank you to Mrs. Clouser for providing this learning experience for our students.

Our Fall Choir Concert has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 29 at 7pm . The concert was changed so that parents of middle school and high school students would be able to attend the community meeting at the High School on Thursday, November 8.

The Office of Family and Community Engagement is hosting the 2nd FACE Academy on November, 13 from 6pm-7:30pm.   Click here for more information.

Did you know...
Shaker Heights High School offers several college courses at Shaker Heights High School, taught by Shaker teachers. We refer to these as “Partnership” classes. Students received dual-credit for each course, the same as if they were taken on a college campus. In 2018/19, we offer courses from Tri-C and Kenyon College in College Composition, Math, History, and Art. Students must apply and be accepted to the college, and they may choose these courses if they satisfy the college’s registration requirements.

Questions? Contact Gabrielle Perrin , CCP Coordinator in the High School Counseling department.
How to Talk to Your Child About Their Disability

Have you considered talking to your child about his/her disability but are just not sure how and when to have this conversation? In reality, it’s an ongoing conversation that is guided by your child’s age, stage of development, and readiness. Join the PTO Special Education Parent/Guardian Group for an evening with Dr. Beth Anne Martin, Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Psychologist on Thursday, November 15, 7pm, at the SMS Library.

Dr. Martin will outline an approach families can use to introduce and discuss a diagnosis with their child including identifying signs of readiness and methods by which children can learn to advocate for themselves. She will also touch on exploring the child’s diagnosis with siblings and classroom peers.

Program is free but reservations are requested. Please contact Lydia Beard , chairperson of the PTO Special Education Group, or Holly Palda , Parent Mentor.
