We MBEs are called to be ever more involved with SMSDC and stand for Diversity!
Dear fellow MBEs,
We are all aware of the recurrent tragic violence news in our country, however, this time it also hit close to home. So close that it was right in the heart of our own communities, impacting our own families, our MBE communities, our first responders, our healthcare providers; in short, it forever touched our lives in more than one way. Praise God that, as far as we know, all MBEs in this area and their immediate loved ones are safe. If this is not the case, our hearts and prayers go out to you. We pray for our friends, coworkers, neighbors and members of our community who lost a loved one or who were injured or hurt in any way, and for their prompt recovery and consolation through our shows of love and support.
Our hearts are broken, but nor our will. When we are being tested, it is our faith that sustains us, for fear only defeats us. Love is what helps us bear the pain we feel, and being excessive in moments like these, we need as much love as our hearts can hold; therefore, we have no room for hate.
The El Paso and Ciudad Juarez Communities need our involvement in the form of prayers, our thoughts and our support. Knowing that it is exactly the diversity of our community what was targeted makes it very personal to every MBE, not only in El Paso and Juarez, or in Texas, or even in our Southwest Region. What was under attack is what SMSDC and NMSDC stand for, and what we hope everyone understands and sees that we should all stand for. The diversity and richness of our communities.
Events like these should open our eyes to the importance of our involvement, not only stand by our communities, but to be the business leaders that make a difference. We need to get even more involved than ever in everything that stands for DIVERSITY.
We also hope to see your support for El Paso in as many was as possible, including your participation in the upcoming is the
Diversity at the Border,
which will take place in
El Paso, TX on September 11 & 12
. Your being there makes a difference to all of us.
Your SMSDC MBEIC Chair,
Beatriz Fernandez

PLEASE DO NOT Let your
SMSDC Certification Expire!
Check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. As a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire, you will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to the image above. DO NOT ignore this e-mail. It may to your spam or junk mail.
Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to complete the entire certification process from the beginning. For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to completing the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid.
The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.
Please contact Gabrielle Ramirez at

for assistance on your SMSDC ReCertification.

Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Leadership FINALIST
Karen Box, SMSDC President & CEO
|
CONGRATULATIONS TO KAREN BOX!
Karen’s heart is in the council which serves as a constant source of inspiration and innovation to the entire SMSDC team, the Board of Directors, our numerous Corporate Members and over 500+ certified Minority Business Owners. She is unwavering in her commitment to educating and developing minority owned businesses and then connecting them with corporate America. This impactful priority has resulted in many MBEs achieving the coveted status of becoming Tier I suppliers to area-based multinational corporations such as Dell, Toyota, JCI, ConocoPhillips, OG&E and Oncor to name a few.
With her unique speaking ability to fold her story into the stories many of us share and connect with, Karen gracefully spoke about her 94-year-old father, who is still living. With genuine sincerity and compassion, she shared with the audience upon his return from World War II, he could not find a job and started his own residential construction related business. He was able to put four kids through college while instilling in each of them essential values such as ethics, integrity, and empathy, all of which contribute to her continued success and development. She tells the story of collecting shingles and taking them to the dumpster in the Texas heat and humidity. “This taught us hard work. It pays off. We want to grow that perspective so our MBEs and their families can continue to work on their businesses and have a positive impact on the local minority community”.
Good luck Karen!
