From your MBEIC Chair
SMSDC’s 20 Year Anniversary celebrated during Premier Face Time in San Antonio came and went in a Flash! But not without leaving an indelible mark on all of us who took part in it. It was great to come together to commemorate 20 years of effort in Supplier Diversity in our region, and ponder all the business opportunities SMSDC has helped create, by bringing together member corporations and certified MBEs.

And key to these opportunities has been our wonderful and energetic President and CEO, Karen Box; whom (Corporations and MBEs are happy to say were not surprised at all) received a well-deserved recognition during Premier Face Time, alongside the Corporation and Supplier of the year awards.

It was also helpful to learn (or be reminded) during the MBE Capacity Plus Session about key factors in every MBE’s Supplier Diversity strategic planning. This came in the form of an informative presentation, which centered on Five Tips for Working in a Supplier Diversity Strategy. Points included selection of the right prospects and leaders with whom MBEs want to engage, and not limiting ourselves to corporations. This was reinforced with the message: “Green is Green”, for which a great panel was put together also at Premier Face Time-to share valuable input from successful Family-Minority Businesses. Other elements included the use of Supply Chain Technologies and Trends; the comparison between Today’s Purchasing Environment and “the Old Way of Purchasing”; Collaboration; Implementation of a Disciplined Process of Project and Change Management; and more. All of which may be accessed and learned by MBEs, by subscribing to SMSDC’s Capacity Plus+ Platform.

The Roundtable Breakfast and Matchmaking sessions provided an extremely dynamic chance to meet buyers from different industries and sectors, as well as Prime Suppliers and other MBEs. Thank you, SMSDC for bringing the buyers to us in one place! For all of us who were there to meet the next customer(s) What a Treat! We left with plenty of business cards and an optimistic outlook of all the prospect opportunities we will pursue.

We trust you took part in Premier Face Time. But if you couldn’t, we expect to see you take part in all SMSDC events you can attend in the future. One of them is the New Frontier Buyers Breakfast Roundtable this upcoming July 31 st and August 1 st in Oklahoma City, Ok. Details and registration information . This event offers educational workshops on doing business with the City of Oklahoma, a panel discussion on MBEs role in the Supplier Diversity Ecosystem, Matchmaking Events, MBE Idol, and the 20-year celebration and Awards Ceremony. Simply stated… Plenty of opportunities to learn and connect.

Also upcoming is the Diversity at the Border with just as many activities and chances to find business opportunities. Save the date! This will take place in El Paso, TX on September 11 & 12 .

Your SMSDC MBEIC Chair,
Beatriz Fernandez

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I obtain a copy of my MBE certification?

Upon approval by the Southwest MSDC Board of Directors, you will receive your welcome letter by email notifying you that your company is now certified as an MBE with SMSDC also included will be your certification number. Once you are approved you can access your certificate at any time using your log-in and password to view/print your certificate. Certification is valid for one year and requires an annual renewal online.

Please contact  [email protected]  with any questions regarding certification with SMSDC.
PLEASE DO NOT Let your
SMSDC Certification Expire!

Check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. As a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire, you will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to the image above. DO NOT ignore this e-mail. It may to your spam or junk mail.

Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to complete the entire certification process from the beginning. For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to completing the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid.  The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Karen Box, SMSDC President & CEO
CONGRATULATIONS TO KAREN BOX!

Karen’s heart is in the council which serves as a constant source of inspiration and innovation to the entire SMSDC team, the Board of Directors, our numerous Corporate Members and over 500+ certified Minority Business Owners. She is unwavering in her commitment to educating and developing minority owned businesses and then connecting them with corporate America. This impactful priority has resulted in many MBEs achieving the coveted status of becoming Tier I suppliers to area-based multinational corporations such as Dell, Toyota, JCI, ConocoPhillips, OG&E and Oncor to name a few.

With her unique speaking ability to fold her story into the stories many of us share and connect with, Karen gracefully spoke about her 94-year-old father, who is still living. With genuine sincerity and compassion, she shared with the audience upon his return from World War II, he could not find a job and started his own residential construction related business. He was able to put four kids through college while instilling in each of them essential values such as ethics, integrity, and empathy, all of which contribute to her continued success and development. She tells the story of collecting shingles and taking them to the dumpster in the Texas heat and humidity. “This taught us hard work. It pays off. We want to grow that perspective so our MBEs and their families can continue to work on their businesses and have a positive impact on the local minority community”.

Good luck Karen!
