Re-Evaluating Your Business and Preparing to the Pivot
Everyone is talking about the “new normal” because of how Covid-19 may change the way we do business. As business owners now is the time to re-evaluate your business plans and begin to think about what changes can help you to build and grow your business. Once you’ve done this, it may be time to prepare your business for the pivot, the pivot from your current model to your new model. Here are some key things to consider when making the change.
1. Do it as soon as you can...
We are always waiting for circumstances to take us out of our comfort zone. We need to start now looking on how to pivot our business. You may think of an idea and discourage yourself because you feel you don’t know everything it will take to be successful. But, remember there are resources, mentors and coaches that can help you realize and action the change. We all have taken risk to begin our business and now may be the time to take another risk that is not within your comfort zone to strengthen and grow your business.
2. Pick new goals that align with your vision...
When I started Treco Services I was a janitorial company. It was my comfort zone. But I diversified into other areas that were not within my comfort zone. My vision when I started my company was focused on janitorial but as I saw opportunities to expand my services. I researched what it would take and how it could benefit my growth and now my company also provides services like facility maintenance and ground maintenance. Look for those new products or services you can provide that will build on the vision you already have in place. Things which will complement your business.
3. Don’t scrap what work you’ve already done...
As you look for new opportunities and changes to your business model, don’t forget your core and where you started. As I grew my business and added other services janitorial has always been my core business. The process of the pivot is about building on what you have, not starting all over.
4. Listen to your customers...
My expansion into ground maintenance and facility maintenance started because I was listening to my customers. Our clients are so busy that if we can resolve a concern or an issue for them whether we are self-performing or bringing in another MBE, to either subcontract or team with, then we are making the lives of our busy clients just a little bit easier. It is not only listening to our customers but observing what they need and how we can fulfill it. For example, one day I was with a client and one of my managers, the client asked if we could handle a roof job. My response was yes. My manager turned and looked at me and said “we don’t do roofs” and I turned and looked at him and I said today we do!
5. Make sure your pivot presents opportunities for growth.
As you evaluate how to pivot your business. You want to identify what direction you want to move into and do the necessary evaluation. Make sure you look at the financial needs, speak to your company leadership, speak with your vendors and suppliers, it can also be as much as speaking with a trusted friend or relative that believes in you and your dreams and vision. If you have a good relationship with one of your clients contact them and get their feedback on the service or product you are considering. Once you have your idea and plan to write it up, review it and look for ways you may be able to make it stronger. With the right plan your vision will open up and your idea will come to life. You don’t want to pivot into something that’s going to be a burden on your business but you also don’t want to be afraid not to test the waters.
Now is a great time for us to consider new possibilities for our business and where those changes can take you. As you begin to your new journey to pivot, remember that SMSDC is here for you. We are always ready to help mentor and coach and help make the connections you might need to make your updated vision and strategy a success.
Stay safe & healthy!
Your SMSDC MBEIC Chair,
Deborah Treviño
President, Treco Services

RECERTIFICATION REMINDER
Companies certified by SMSDC are required to renew their certification each year. It is the company’s responsibility to maintain current certification yearly. The certification expiration date will be listed on the certificate and in the company’s online profile. While registered contacts may receive a courtesy notification warning that the certification is due to expire, SMSDC is not responsible for ensuring that a Minority-owned Business Enterprise (MBE) gets recertified. Recertification remains the sole responsibility of each MBE.
The applicant is also responsible for submitting the required documents for recertification.
These documents include:
- Completed recertification online application
- Signed, dated and notarized affidavit/declaration page
- Complete and signed copy of the IRS Federal Tax Return including all schedules
*PLEASE NOTE:
Automatic computer-generated courtesy reminders from the registration portal are sent out 90, 60, and 30 days before your MBE Certification expires. Company email settings may prevent the notification from being sent to your INBOX, please check JUNK/SPAM boxes to accept this reminder email.
For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to completing the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid.
The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.
