From your MBEIC Chair
2017 MBE IDOL WINNER!!!
I did it!! I made a decision to participate in the SMSDC’s first time event for 2017 MBE Idol. I could not have put my company out there and win if I did not,
1. Participate
2. Believe in myself
3. Believe in my company/employees
SMSDC has put this yearly event together. As a certified MBE, it gives you an opportunity to compete and become the next MBE Idol of the year. If you have never stood in front of a crowd, fear sets in and growth takes you to a level of a new beginning as a business owner. Yes, we get to present ourselves in front of corporations and other MBE’s. Participating allows you to be evaluated on your service, your presentation, skills an experiences. This is an amazing opportunity to help you strengthen your presentation as you are scaling your business. Yes, you will go before one of the largest corporations Dell, as you make it to the finals. Dell has brought together a team of procurement staff who will listen, carefully evaluate your presentation while giving strategic pointers and share what they look for in MBE’s.
Dell may not buy what you sell...Dell prepares you and helps you build your confidence to present yourself to other corporations and MBE’s. Remember MBE’s also have to run their business so they buy IT services, cleaning services, Paper supplies, computers, phones etc.
Dell believes in MBE’s. If they do not purchase directly, they help open doors to introduce you to their Tier One suppliers. Dell gave me an amazing opportunity. Treco Services is a comprehensive janitorial, facility management and landscape service provider. I was able to put a proposal together for their custodial service with 1 of their Tier Ones. I was not award the contract but just by giving me the opportunity to be invited to the table helped to open the door to other opportunities. We are now providing vegetation management services, disinfecting of facilities, construction and facility maintenance in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and West Texas services areas for a NMSDC Corporate Member ONCOR
Participating in the MBE Idol back in 2017 enabled me to grow my business. Please join us at our next SMSDC RTF meeting to learn more about how you can take advantage of this program and let the competition begin.
- How does being named 2017 MBE Idol of the Year add value to your SMSDC certification?
The value-add is two-fold. First of all, I was able to showcase the investments I have made in becoming certified and involved with the SMSDC. The SMSDC certification by itself tells corporate America and other MBE’s my company has passed the stringent requirements of certification and I am thoroughly qualified to do business with them. The integrity aligned with SMSDC’s MBE Idol competition is growing. When this accomplishment is included on my capability statement, Treco Services is afforded the competitive advantage which helps my business continue to grow.
- If anyone was still not sure about participating what words of encouragement/ advice would you give them?
I can only share with them what I feel in my heart. Believe in yourself and in the services your business provides. I was not sure I wanted to participate but to go forward was one of the greatest business decisions I made. In front of me was an opportunity to introduce myself and my company to not just one corporation or business, but to all of the attendee’s at SMSDC’s Premier Face Time EXPO. And it would cost me nothing but time as I completed my powerpoint presentation. After I incorporated the feedback given to me during the competition, my powerpoint presentation is now the greatest marketing tool in my business toolkit. With everything now being virtual, it can be sent out almost immediately to any company who is interested in doing business with me. We are all in business to grow and market our business but most of all ourselves.

Debbie Trevino

Applied Materials Earns Intel’s 2020 Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) Award
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 30, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Applied Materials, Inc. has earned the exclusive Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) Award with distinguished performance in supplier diversity for 2020. This award recognizes the absolute top performers in the Intel supply chain for their dedication to continuous improvement and their performance over the past year.
“Congratulations to Applied Materials on receiving Intel’s highest supplier recognition, the SCQI Award. As one of only seven in this elite group in 2020, they truly define world-class performance,” said Dr. Randhir Thakur, chief supply chain officer at Intel. “During a uniquely challenging year, they have earned the Intel SCQI program’s top award through their unwavering commitment to quality, their close partnership with Intel and their drive to improve continuously.”
The Intel SCQI Award recognizes the highest level of achievement in the Intel SCQI Program, a multiyear road map for continuous improvement for high-performing Intel suppliers. Of the thousands of Intel suppliers around the world, only a few hundred qualify to participate in the SCQI Program.
In 2020, only seven suppliers in the entire Intel supply chain earned an Intel SCQI Award, making them truly the best of the best.
To qualify for an Intel SCQI Award, suppliers must exceed the highest expectations, meet aggressive performance goals and score 95 percent or higher on performance assessments throughout the year. Suppliers must also meet 90 percent or more of their improvement plan and demonstrate outstanding quality and business systems.

Open for Business: A Diverse Supply Chain for a Resilient Semiconductor Industry
|
|
The pandemic has taught us that diversity in the supply chain is more critical than ever. We need to be reliant on all resources available to us and seize opportunities where we can. With 2021 coming in hot with chip shortages across the world, there is a race to increase production yields despite traditional supply chains tapping out from a capacity standpoint. Solutions to these technology and supply chain problems require all hands-on deck including the smartest people in the world wherever, whoever, and however they are. Unfortunately, a quick look at the semiconductor supply chain reveals that for whatever reason, too many diverse owned suppliers are nowhere to be found. So, what does this mean for the semiconductor industry? It’s as if we’re working with one hand tied behind our back.
Supplier Diversity
Supplier Diversity is a strategy that drives the inclusion of diverse-owned businesses in the procurement of goods and services within an organization. Diverse groups vary globally in accordance with local laws but often include underrepresented groups such as women and local in-country minorities. Diverse companies are currently certified by being at least 51% owned, operated, and controlled by diverse individuals. Supplier diversity does not include lowering bidding standards or awarding business based on diversity status. Diversity done right increases ideas and competition.
By diversifying the supply chain, we can expect to see an influx of innovation to improve our processes through competition. Diverse companies entering new markets bring unique perspectives and can often focus on R&D problems large multinationals overlook. Engaging in the semiconductor industry allows local businesses to learn from what already exists in the market and offer new ideas that were not considered before. Furthermore, local businesses have more flexibility to create custom solutions for the process.
New diverse suppliers also mean additional capacity to supplement the already taxed supply base. If your current suppliers are telling you they’re full, it might be time to branch out. Don’t assume that diverse suppliers are incapable of scale. There are many examples of multi-billion-dollar companies that are certified-diverse bringing world class scale, solutions, and capability to existing semiconductor supply chains. From one off prototyping to large scale manufacturing, diverse suppliers bring multiple skill sets.
