During this zoom event, SMSDC certified MBEs presented their business virtually to the SMSDC community which includes Corporate Members, Certified MBEs, community partners and other peers that were interested in learning more about the business or were interested in either becoming a Corporate member, Certified MBE, or they were Corporate buyers looking for Certified MBEs to add to their supply chain. This was also an efficient opportunity in which ConocoPhillips, ONE Gas, OG&E Energy and Union Pacific Railroad presented their supplier diversity program, purchasing needs, and upcoming opportunities to get more involved. Thank you all to those who were able to join this event.

Be sure to make it to the next virtual event that will be presented on August 19th, Thursday at 3-4pm. This event will be an opportunity to potentially connect MBEs with a variety of opportunities in several industries.

NMSDC Appoints Ying McGuire as President and CEO
NMSDC appoints its first AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) woman and immigrant president
POSTED ON JULY 28, 2021 BY NMSDC
NEW YORK, NY | July 28, 2021 – On the cusp of its 50th anniversary and at a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), America’s most influential and successful minority business development organization, announced the appointment of Ying McGuire as the new President and CEO.

Ms. McGuire serves as NMSDC’s first Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) President and CEO, bringing over two successful decades of leadership experience across both for profit and non-profit sectors.

While at Dell Technology, Ms. McGuire drove the strategy and execution that nearly quintupled Dell’s diversity spend from $640M to $3B within three years. Subsequently, she joined an NMSDC Certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), Technology Integration Group, as an executive leader and took the company global.

Ms. McGuire has also delivered exceptional service in the civic sector as a non-profit leader, economic empowerment board member, and policy advisor to government agencies. In 2016, the United States Secretary of Commerce appointed Ms. McGuire to the United States Investment Advisory Council.

“I am humbled and delighted to take on the role of NMSDC President and CEO at a time of both challenges and great opportunities,” says Ying McGuire. “For nearly 50 years, NMSDC has been at the forefront of creating economic opportunities for all certified minority businesses. NMSDC is uniquely positioned to deliver on its mission to enable MBEs to grow, to achieve their full potential,” added McGuire.

The U.S. Census Bureau data reveals that nearly 20% of American businesses are minority-owned. Those firms generated nearly $1.4 trillion in annual revenue and provide employment to more than 51 million employees.

“As we navigate through the impact that COVID-19 has presented and address the challenges and opportunities, NMSDC is well positioned for its next chapter, a chapter of modernization and focus on supporting minority businesses to grow profitably. I am confident that Ms. McGuire’s track record of success, charismatic leadership, energy, and innovative mindset will position NMSDC to provide even greater opportunities for all Certified Minority Business Enterprises, while creating better value for our Corporate Members,” says Jose Turkienicz, NMSDC Chairman of the Board of Directors.

As surveys show, minorities were hit disproportionately harder. NMSDC offers its Minority Business Enterprise (MBEs) the gold-standard certification and delivers innovative services and support to those adversely affected, while offering a compelling vision for a prosperous future.

The Certification Committee can recommend revocation of certification, for good cause, of any certified MBE at any time. SMSDC will determine under what circumstance a business or individual business owner can reapply, length of expulsion or be permanently banned.

The termination or revocation of certification of a business concern, for good cause may be necessary, under several circumstances.

Can include, but are not limited to:
  • The sale, exchange or transfer of ownership of the certified MBE;
  • Failure of the certified MBE to maintain its status as a bona fide MBE as defined in these guidelines;
  • Failure or refusal of the MBE to allow SMSDC representative access to /or the right to inspect the certified MBE’s place of business;
  • Cessation of business operations by the certified MBE;
  • Withholding notice from or failure to provide notice to SMSDC within (30) days of a loss in ownership or management or operational control by ethnic-minority group;
  • Failure to notify SMSDC of change in business
  • Submitting false or misleading information to Southwest MSDC
  • Failure to submit an application for renewal of certification along with the required documentation within the designated timeframe.

Any applicant whose application for certification or recertification is denied and such denial affirmed under the provisions above may after one year, reapply for certification.

A decision will be based upon the submission of information indicating a change in status or other circumstances that prevented certification or which caused a denial or termination of certification.
