SMUHSD Parents/Guardians: Please take the Panorama Survey

The Panorama Survey is issued to parents and guardians, students and staff of the San Mateo Union High School District every year. Each of these groups is given a survey unique to their group. The District is issuing this survey, because we want to know what each of these groups think about their experience in our schools. We want to know your thoughts and opinions on:

  • School culture and climate
  • Communications from the District/school to you
  • Opportunities for engagement with your school community

It is important that we hear from a variety of diverse individuals. Your responses help to guide our planning for future academic and enrichment programs and help us to address areas where our programs need improvement. The results also help us to support successful initiatives and evaluate and improve those that are not as successful.

The parent/guardian survey (Spanish) takes about 14 minutes to complete.

The survey closes on February 28.

SMUHSD In-Person Workshop Dates

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month

In CTE classes, students gain real-world experience through relevant hands-on projects that combine content knowledge with industry-specific technical skills.

SMUHSD offers CTE classes in career sectors such as building and construction trades, information technology, hospitality, engineering and architecture and arts media and entertainment.

New in the 2024-2025 School Year, we introduced an Introduction to Interior Design class and Engineering Technology Trade MC3 Program, both at Aragon High School.

CTE curriculum integrates work-based learning opportunities such as guest speakers, field trips, and job shadowing to expose students to a variety of career options. Through projects developed with industry partners, students gain the communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will ensure their success in any future career.

Career and Technical Education Teachers partner with industry representatives and engage in ongoing professional development in order to ensure that our curriculum is up-to-date and reflects the latest trends in industry.

San Mateo Adult and Career Student Receives Mini Grant to Speak at National Conference

Aragon and Burlingame High Students Participate in Career Development Conference Competitive Events Program

Five Aragon High School students and seven BHS students, accompanied by their DECA club advisors (Colin Johnson - College of San Mateo Dual Enrollment business instructor at AHS/BHS, and BHS Gov, Econ and History teacher Alex Gray), joined hundreds of other local area DECA members from nine other schools to compete in their first DECA Inc. Silicon Valley District Career Development Conference in Santa Clara, January 10-12.

The experience opened everyone’s eyes to the breadth and depth of DECA’s abilities to enhance business education with “Olympic-style” competitions. Each student selected a competitive event type in which to participate. Events include individual and team events across every discipline in business. Students studied for a written exam and practiced role-play scenarios where they would demonstrate their knowledge and capacity to think on their feet in a variety of business situations. Role play events require students to embody professionalism in their demeanor, knowledge and dress (business formal attire required). This experience directly prepares students for college and career by requiring them to rise to stringent, externally-imposed standards of performance and conduct.

Each of the hundreds of participants were ranked to place in the top 10, third, second and first place for their performance on their exam, in their role play scenarios, and in their overall performance in their chosen event.  Participants completed their exams on Friday. They moved into their role-play competitions on Saturday. On Sunday morning, an awards ceremony bestowed on participants the top-10 finalist pins, assessment-specific medals, and overall performance trophies for each competitive event.

Even though the AHS and BHS students had no prior experience at these events, three of the 12 placed as finalists in their chosen event.
