The month includes the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, and Belize. Hillsdale High Students Wins Silicon Valley Bike Coalition Youth Leader Award
Congratulations to Hillsdale High School 12th grader Anya Lin - she recently was the recipient of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition Youth Leader Award, presented at the August 29 14th Annual Silicon Valley Bicycle Summit. Anya was honored for her efforts to create a bike-friendly community in and around her school. Anya also spoke at the 14th Annual Silicon Valley Bicycle Summit about her club's efforts to improve the communities inside and outside of Hillsdale High School.
Anya serves as the president of Hillsdale High School Bike Club and her goals are to make biking more accessible, fun, and safe for everyone at our school. The HHS Bike Club runs a bike lending program where they receive bikes from the local police department, refurbish them, and lend them out to students for free, ensuring that anyone who wants to ride a bike, will be able to have one. The Club also promotes biking through events like “Two-Wheel Tuesday”, where students and teachers have bike races in the courtyard, and “Ride for Pancakes Day”, which encourages green transportation.
Additionally, as partners with the San Mateo Transportation Department and Alta Planning, the Bike Club has been actively making roads safer around campus. From participating in walk audits and planning sessions with city planners to assisting in project implementation, club members have successfully increased safety at key areas of congestion around the school.

SMUHSD Summer Work Experience Program Expands to Serve More Students in its Fourth Year
|
San Mateo Union High School District recently concluded the fourth year of its Summer "Work Experience Can Work" program in collaboration with the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR). The program, in its fourth year, supports SMUHSD graduates who have previously received special education services from SMUHSD. The funding from the program is provided by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that the Department of Rehabilitation manages.
The young adults who have signed up for the paid summer employment program participated in a one day employment preparation boot camp to learn workplace readiness skills, participate in job exploration, and advance their self-advocacy skills. The participants had in-class support from SMUHSD program leads Matt Park and Cammy Leung, and various Student Service Counselors from the San Bruno and San Mateo Department of Rehabilitation offices. Transition Specialist Eli Poblitz oversees the program on behalf of SMUHSD.
The participants were matched to SMUHSD business partners along the peninsula for a work-based learning opportunity for the summer that started in early June. Students had the opportunity to work full-time until the end of August and earned $17.35 per hour. Students earned approximately $25,000 in combined student wages over the summer.

Annual Career Expo Connects Students with Career Pathways
| |
More than 400 SMUHSD students and their family members attended the Districtwide Career Expo on Tuesday, September 10.
The expo, formerly known as “Stay in the Bay with $100K,” is in its fourth year and was held at San Mateo High School and generously sponsored by San Francisco International Airport.
At the expo, students learned about high-paying careers, they networked with industry professionals, they got to participate in hands-on activities and they learned about various opportunities from the 50+ representatives from Bay Area companies, apprenticeships and training programs.
One goal of the Career Expo is to educate and expose students to opportunities for high-paying careers that don’t necessarily require a four year degree.
If you attended the 2024 Career Expo and would like to share feedback, please fill out our short survey.
If you are interested in participating in this event as an employer in 2025, please email Nancy Kane, SMHS Career and Volunteer Coordinator: nkane@smuhsd.org.
Thank you to SMHS student photographer Maya Welch!

- Speaker: Belle Liang, PhD, professor and author of "How to Navigate a Life: The New Science of Finding Your Way in School, Career, and Beyond
- Register
Belle Liang, PhD, co-author of How to Navigate Life, devotes her career to counseling students and cutting through the daily pressures to find kids' “true north”: what really turns them on in life, allowing them to choose a course of study, a college, and a career. Even the gentlest parents tend to play into pervasive societal pressure for students to PERFORM. And when we take the foot off the gas, we ask kids to figure out what their PASSION is. Neither is a recipe for mental or physical health, or, ironically, for performance.
How to Navigate Life shows that successful human beings instead tap into their PURPOSE—the why behind the what and how. Best of all, purpose is a completely translatable quality to every aspect of life, from first jobs to last jobs and everything in between.

This survey will take about 5 minutes to complete. We ask that each family complete one survey per school your children attend.
Your responses will be kept confidential and neither your name nor your child’s name will be associated with any results. Your input will help us build a city where all students can safely, confidently, and joyfully travel to and from school by biking, walking, rolling, or riding the bus, building healthy habits and community for all.
