May 12: Special Education District Advisory Council Meet and Greet with Superintendent Booker and Special Education Team


San Mateo Union High School District’s Special Education Advisory Committee invites you to meet with our special education team as we close out the year. We plan to share the progress we have made in order to affirm that all students with Individual Education Plans (IEP)s have the right to a diploma.  


Superintendent Randall Booker and members of the Special Education department will be in attendance from 4:30-5 p.m. for a meet and greet. SMUHSD Board Members have been invited to attend as well. 


From 5-6 p.m., we will be reviewing the newly board-adopted graduation options for students with IEPs. In this meeting, we will be reviewing the requirements and implications of Plan 5, Inclusive Diploma, and Plan 7, reduced credits.

Additionally, on Wednesday, May 14 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. a Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Inaugural Appreciation Event will take place at the San Mateo County Office of Education. At this event, SMUHSD’s Special Education Department will recognize Kevin Herring, San Mateo Medical Center, who works with our Bay University students and we will also recognize the Papan family that provides annual scholarships to our students with disabilities. This event is a culmination of SELPA’s Community Advisory Committee work. Please join us in celebrating. 

Equity Advisory Meeting is May 15

Friday, May 9: Mills High School Celebrates Completion of Site Improvement Projects 

The ribbon cutting celebration at Mills High School will take place on Friday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m.

AVID Senior Standouts Recognized at Board Meeting

Congratulations to the following students who were recognized as AVID Senior Standouts at the April 24 Board Meeting:

The AVID program is designed for at-promise students who show academic potential. The program focuses on the importance of study skills, writing, goal setting, critical thinking, & time management needed for college and career readiness. During junior and senior year, there is an increased focus on exploring post-high school options.

Burlingame High Students Excel at Math Competition


27 BHS students recently participated in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), which consists of a 75-minute, 25-question test. Four of the 27 students qualified for the next round called the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a three-hour, 15-question test:

Two of those four students qualified for the third round, called USA Mathematical Olympiad and USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO/USAJMO), a two-day, nine-hour, six-question essay/proof exam:

Connor Leong qualified for the next round, which is the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP). Connor was one of the top 30 freshmen and sophomores that participated in the USAMO from across the US. He received a Silver Award!


MOP is a three-week summer program, held at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy from June 11-July 2, where students participate in a variety of team tests to determine the teams that will represent the USA at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad.  


BHS Mathematics Teacher Kristin Berglund is the Math Club Advisor.

Two Mills Athletic Teams Earn Scholastic Team Award


Congratulations to both Mills High's Varsity Girls Swimming team and the Badminton team for earning the CCS Scholastic Team Award this past season.


Scholastic Team Awards are bestowed upon the five varsity teams in each CCS championship sport, which have the highest collective GPA for the grading period which ends during the season of sport.

Mills Robotics Team Continues to Improve

In early April, the Mills High Robitics Team - the Boba Bots - attended the East Bay Regional at Berkeley High School. They ended up placing 25 out of 55 with a score of 5-4-0, an improvement from their last competition, Pinnacles.

SMUHSD Named California Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Honoree


The California Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) recently recognized the San Mateo Union High School District as a 2025 California Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Honoree.


The California Green Ribbon Award honors schools, school districts, and Institutes of Higher Education for excellence in resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education. The recognition award is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education (ED) effort to identify and communicate practices that result in improved student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness; and reinforces federal efforts to increase energy independence and economic security.

Aragon Math Club Stays Busy Hosting Marathon and Competing at Stanford


Math Marathon

On April 11, the Aragon Math Club hosted the Aragon Math Marathon (AMM), a challenging math competition for middle school students. The event saw a great turnout, with participants from Bowditch, Crocker, Borel, Bayside, and Taylor middle schools. Students competed in a series of timed rounds covering various mathematical topics.


Aragon Math Club members took on all aspects of the event, from creating the math problems to proctoring the rounds and grading the competition. Their hard work and dedication ensured the event ran smoothly and was a great success.


The AMM provided middle school students with a fun and engaging way to challenge themselves, while also fostering a love for math.

Stanford Math Competition

On April 12, two teams made up of Aragon’s Math Club members competed in the Stanford Math Tournament (SMT), an elite, student-run competition that draws hundreds of high schoolers from across the country and beyond.


  • Team Riemann Hypothesis: Akilan Paramasivam, Jake Hu, Yury Bychkov, Ishan Mookherjee, Anson Yu, and William Ye
  • Team Collatz Conjecture: Diya Gourineni, Claire Dong, Claire Qi, Allinah Zhan, and Laura Wang


Team Riemann Hypothesis placed in the top 35% in the fast-paced Guts Round and ranked in the top 40% overall among all teams.


Akilan Paramasivam earned standout individual honors, placing 5th in Algebra and 9th in Geometry.


Aragon Math Teacher Adam Jacobs continues to advise the club and support students in high-level competitions.

Burlingame High Student Places Third in Spanish Writing Contest


10th Grade Burlingame High student Olivia Guido placed third in the “Escribo en Español” writing contest hosted by the Education Office of the Consulate General of Spain and the California Department of Education. 


“Escribo en Español” encourages students to further their Spanish writing skills by providing awards for the best prose and poetry. The theme for this year’s contest was “El planeta en peligro."

American Legion Auxiliary Announces California Girls State Delegation
