Greetings!

Happy July from the HKHP team! ☀️ In this issue, we're sharing highlights from our panel at the annual School Nutrition Association conference, an update on our summer poster marketing campaign, and a major California budget win for plant-based meals and non-dairy milk in schools. Read on for these stories, plus delicious summer recipes 🏖

Presenting at the School Nutrition Association National Conference

This month, HKHP Founding Director, Barbara Gates, travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina to speak on a panel at the SNA National Conference: Beans, Peas and Lentils: Elevating Plant-Based and Culturally Diverse School Meals. Co-presenters included dynamic reps from USA Pulses, Friends of the Earth, and Alexandria City's School Nutrition Chef extraordinaire!

Barbara shared about HKHP's programs and their potential to link classroom to cafeteria, celebrating a Cool Bean of the Month – a spin off of the popular Harvest of the Month initiative in school cafeterias.

Barbara also helped staff the Plant Powered School Meals Coalition booth in the exhibit hall, where coalition members connected with hundreds of School Nutrition Pros to provide technical support, successful school lunch recipes and marketing materials, including HKHP's vibrant Plant-Positive posters and PSAs. It was a great networking and growing experience, with a crazy wonderful cherry on top...

The day after the conference, Barbara dropped into the Charlotte-Mecklenburg district office, where the gracious nutrition services staff accepted our offer of posters for their 185 cafeterias, reaching 140,000 students everyday.

Cool Beans!

'Plant Power' Cafeteria Posters Go Coast to Coast!

Our colorful "Plant Power" and "Beans" posters are popping up on school cafeteria walls from California to the Carolinas — and the response has been incredible! Our current numbers show us partnering with 13 school districts across 4 states (California, Oregon, North Carolina, and Montana) to reach an estimated 120,000+ students in 200 schools!

Every day, these vibrant visuals remind students that beans are a healthy, Earth-friendly protein, a joyful nudge toward plant-forward choices right where they choose their lunch. Best of all, we provide them to schools completely free of charge.

But one thing stands between our posters and even more cafeteria walls: as they travel farther across the country, the cost of printing and mailing full sets adds up fast.

💚 Will you help us send Plant Power across the country?`

$34 ships a full poster set to one district —

putting our "plants for protein" message in front of thousands more students.

CA Expands Access for Plant-Based School Meals

California approved a new state budget that includes major wins for expanding plant-based meals and non-dairy milk in schools. The budget allocated $500 million for the Kitchen Infrastructure and Training (KIT) Program that can be used to train cafeteria staff, upgrade kitchens, expand scratch cooking, and procure healthier foods and beverages (including plant-based!). This momentous funding helps remove many of the barriers that school districts face when wanting to serve more nutritious, Earth-friendly, and culturally diverse meals in the cafeteria.

Healthy Kids, Happy Planet! was proud to sign a coalition letter along with 120+ school districts, health professionals, anti-hunger groups, environmental organizations, students, parents, and other advocates urging lawmakers to include funding in this budget for serving non-dairy milk on the lunch line. Following federal legislation (Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act) earlier this year, this funding is crucial for districts to overcome the financial burden.

Thank you to Governor Newsom and the California legislature for passing this budget, and to all of the other groups who helped advocate for this vote towards healthier school meals!
