The Extension Nutrition Team of knowledgeable nutrition educators provide practical, hands-on activities, and skills for healthy meal prep, as well as explore the importance of physical activity in a healthy lifestyle for the community members in the North Country.

Plan, Plan, Plan

Based on your budget for the week, plan meals and make a grocery list with the food items you will need. To find savings in your area and to discover new ways to prepare budget-friendly foods, click here to use the Shop Simple with MyPlate app!

Stretch Your Food Dollars and Buy In Bulk

Are you tired of wasting and throwing away foods in your kitchen? You can save money by buying larger quantities of food that can be stored. Canned or dried beans, whole grains like oats, and frozen vegetables can be stored for longer amounts of time, making it easier to not overbuy foods that will be thrown away later (such as large amounts of fresh vegetables).

Compare Similar Products

Look for the "unit price" on the shelf label near the item price. Compare different brands and sizes for the cheapest option. Compare fresh, frozen, and canned when it comes to your fruits and vegetables!

Grow Your Own at Home

You can grow fresh herbs right inside your home and its much cheaper than purchasing them. Basil, oregano, cilantro, among many others can be grown in a windowsill or even on the counter in your kitchen!

Look for Produce On-sale

Buying what is on sale is a great way to save yourself some money and get a variety of foods in your diet. You can also do this while stocking up on canned or frozen items.

The Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) provides nutrition assistance to people with low income. it can help you buy nutritious foods for a better diet.

If you need help applying for SNAP, call or email a Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) Coordinator. NOEP Coordinators tell you if you may be eligible for SNAP, answer any questions you may have, and help you complete and submit your application. It is free and confidential.
