SNAP-Ed is a FREE, confidential nutrition education program that helps families manage food resources during tough economic times. The Extension Nutrition Team of knowledgeable nutrition educators provide practical, hands-on activities and skills for healthy meal prep, as well as explore the importance of physical activity in a healthy lifestyle for the community members in the North Country.

Using SNAP for Gardening
Using your SNAP benefits to purchase seeds and food plants is a great way to feed your family conveniently from your own home garden!

Gardening can be a great way to grow food, and SNAP can help. SNAP can be used to purchase seeds and plants which gives people an option to increase the fruits and vegetables that are available to them.
Items eligible to be purchased using your EBT card include:

• Seeds for producing edible plants, and edible plants (e.g. tomatoes and green pepper seeds or plants, and fruit trees);
• Edible food producing roots, bushes, and bulbs (e.g., asparagus crowns and onion bulbs); and
• Seeds and plants used to produce spices for use in cooking
 Gardening soil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other gardening supplies are NOT eligible items.

Tomatoes at Home
Beefsteak, roma, cherry, and grape: these are all types of tomatoes that can be used in different ways.

a tomato with a sweet subtle smell is a good sign that it is ripe.

good source of lycopene- an antioxidant that promotes heart health.

Store at room temperature away from sunlight. do not store in a plastic bag.

a sliced tomato should be refrigerated and used within 4 days.

Season tomatoes with different herbs to enhance their flavor. roast them in the oven with olive oil fora quick side dish.

Submit your application for SNAP Benefits using NYDocSubmit!
It is a mobile application that allows applicants and recipients to take pictures of their documents and submit them to their local DSS district office using Apple iOS or Android device. There is no longer a need to stand in line or travel to the district office to drop off documents.

What is needed to use NYDocSubmit?
1. An Apple iOS or Android phone or tablet with a working camera and data or Wi-Fi connectivity.
2. Go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
3. Search for “NYDocSubmit” (one word).
4. Click on GET or INSTALL.
5. An existing or new NY.gov ID from https://my.ny.gov.
Note: The Application requires individuals to use the current version of the Application to successfully upload document images.
