Welcome Our Latest Green Businesses

Montessori New Beginnings Academy of Plano is a non-profit school serving children 18 months to 6th grade. Celebrating its 30th year, Head of School Rebecca Bernard is excited that regular operating procedures helped them earn Green Business Certification. Students gain hands-on experience with sustainability practices, ranging from daily recycling to participating in creek clean-up days. The facility is built to encourage connection with nature through natural lighting from multiple windows and skylights, and features motion sensors which regulate energy-efficient lighting. Each classroom boasts a separate heat pump, eliminating the need to air condition unoccupied rooms. Mealtime is a green educational opportunity as students dine with reusable versus disposable dishware and utensils. Food scraps are collected for composting in the onsite garden. Staff and student exposure to daily green living means these practice s will benefit our environment for the next generation.

Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County is a nonprofit known for its cadre of volunteers who build simple, affordable homes for deserving low-income families. Habitat's ReStore ( nonprofit home improvement and décor store) supports their mission to revitalize neighborhoods through home ownership. ReStore offers an ever-changing inventory of products, ranging from appliances and furniture to supplies for DIYers such as doors, flooring and tools. While Habitat's business model of reusing goods is sustainable, it's not what earned them Green Business Certification. Their committed staff and Green Team refurbish and repair donated goods, purchase recycled-content office supplies, replace light bulbs in fixtures for sale with energy-efficient options and even collect coffee grounds for composting. Habitat moves to a new, larger store in spring 2017 so it can do more good for both the community and the environment .

The Hope Center  is a unique ministry home to more than 40 Christian-based nonprofits which positively impacts lives both locally and globally. The 185,000-square-foot lodge-style facility rests on nine acres of lush greenery, featuring walking paths and a prayer garden. The community enjoys breakfast or lunch at the chef-led Café 6:19 (where compostable and/or recyclable food packaging is the rule) or purchases books from its Christian bookstore. In addition to leasing space to tenants, the Hope Center rents rooms and event space to members of the community who agree to their Statement of Faith. The Hope Center's core values include sustainability which aligns with the Green Business Certification Program. Their green attributes include sustainable purchasing, including chemical-free cleaners and pest-control products, recycled toner cartridges, recycled content office supplies, use of energy-efficient lighting, water conserving devices, and both single-stream and electronic recycling.

Be Part of Plano's Green Business Movement -
35 Businesses and Growing
Join the City of Plano's 35 Green Business Certified companies. Certification is good for two years. Once Commercial Recycling staff verifies the company is maintaining its commitment to sustainable operations, the business can elect to renew for another two-year period. Diane Lohr, Green Team Lead for FM Global says, "The process of becoming Green Business Certified helped us demonstrate our environmental commitment to our employees and working partners by documenting our existing sustainable measures and encouraging us to take on more. Although we're moving our office outside of Plano next year, FM Global realizes the benefits of recertification for as long as we're in Plano."

During fiscal year 2015-2016, these 11 companies have renewed. Congratulations to Villas at Chase Oaks on their second renewal.

Your Commitment Pushes Commercial Diversion
to Reach a New Milestone
Since 2000, your Plano Commercial Recycling Team has been working with businesses to divert material away from the landfill through recycling efforts. For the first time in Plano's history, the commercial sector has reached the annual diversion goal of 40% which was set in 2000.

It's been no easy task with total commercial volume from the commercial sector increasing by 120,000 tons since 2000, demonstrating the need for strong landfill-diversion programs. Working with our business community, Commercial Recycling Coordinators set up numerous recycling accounts under three recycling programs: single-stream, organics (food waste) and construction and demolition (C&D).

The recent explosion of commercial development led to a record amount of recycled C&D material. We are on a new frontier with most Legacy West projects achieving recycling diversion rates of 95% and above. Construction recycling success, combined with other established programs, has our commercial sector as green as ever this holiday season. Without the commitment and efforts from our business partners, we could not have achieved this milestone.

Name Our GBC Wrapped Car!

We will share our favorite submissions and publish the winning name and the winner's name in the March edition of the SNAP e-News. Name that car!
