Hubs and I visited Home Depot this week to buy a new dishwasher. Thrill of the day. Have to say, I am not a fan of that store. Why? Because as I walk through looking around their massive aisles and shelves, it only painfully reminds me of all the home projects we should / need to tackle which require setting up services to repair, replace, refresh. (On the larger projects, Hubs and I are far from your typical DIY'ers.)
Our homes are a constant work in progress. Here in our Florida home - in its 19th season of family life and beach visitors - not only the dishwasher needs replacing, so does the worn carpet. The dining room needs updated decor on its walls, the bathroom ceiling needs painting over previous leaky spots, the small flat screen TV needs to be hung, we have outdated blinds/shades on the doors/windows, kitchen counter could use a fresh look, as could the white tile floor with its filthy grout. And that's just the inside.
Are we EVER finished with home improvement? Does not seem like it. Being a homeowner can feel overwhelming and I hate Home Depot. There, I said it.
Sometimes we feel this way about ourselves. Being a human being can feel overwhelming. There is always something to refresh, replace, repair, re-do, rework. We are in constant mode of self-improvement (or at least I hope so). We zip through the Internet and read this advice and those tips ... this how-to article and that self-care list:
"14 Things That Ruin a Relationship"
"6 Things to Learn in Your Free Time"
"How to Start Doing the Things You Want to Do"
"48 Way to Take Better Care of Yourself"
(48???? really? how about we start with only two???)
"How to have the Perfect Golf Swing"
"How to make the Most Delicious French Toast in the World"
And the information keeps incoming, incoming, incoming - OVERLOAD. There is even a SELF-IMPROVEMENT MONTH. (Watch out, it's approaching in September!)
We wanna ...
- have more patience ...
- stop working so much ...
- remember to lotion our dry feet daily ...
- never let the gray roots show ...
- think more happy thoughts ...
- keep a neater house ...
- grow the perfect tomatoes ...
- reach out to our friends/siblings more ...
- get better sleep ...
- stop being a procrastinator ...
- oh - and lose weight - always lose weight!
- stop talking so loudly ...
- cease the gossip and judgments about others ...
- remember to put down the toilet seat ...
Are we EVER finished with self-improvement? Well snippeteers, the answer is no. There, I said it.
