Temple Israel’s Electronic Bulletin

E-Shalom

NOVEMBER 2023

Cheshvan-Kislev 5784

“Shalom, Welcome to Temple Israel....” is a phrase taught to us by Carole Lachman, a beloved, long-time congregant and bulletin editor who died in 2002. We named our bulletin in her honor and worked to realize her vision of Temple Israel as a community that welcomes the stranger and lets no one stand alone. This new version of the bulletin maintains our tradition of communicating with our Temple Israel family and continues to forward Carole’s vision, love and devotion for our synagogue.

Rabbi Michael D. Howald

The murders perpetrated by Hamas on Israeli civilians and soldiers alike on Simchat Torah are by now indelibly burned into the memory of Jews everywhere. The heinous acts of terrorism directed against concert goers, families sleeping in their homes and even children and the elderly have shaken us all to our core. Hardly less painful have been the images of people marching around the world, and even in our own city, seeming to applaud the brutal actions of Hamas as brave deeds of resistance worthy of praise and support. I, like many of you, have been shocked, even disgusted, by both the outright approval for Hamas shown in so many quarters as well as by the silence of so many voices who have previously consistently spoken out against even less monstrous acts committed against other countries and peoples.

Even in the midst of this despair, I was extremely proud and gratified that so many came to our special service of memory, healing and hope on the Shabbat following the terrorist attacks and stayed for the family service that followed. During my more than 13 years as your rabbi, I don’t remember a better attended Erev Shabbat service.  We all felt, I believe, an intense desire to gather as a community and, despite the threats made against the worldwide Jewish community, to assemble as an act of solidarity against those who seek to make us afraid. We cried together, sang together, and prayed together and took heart in the laughter of small children enjoying the glow of Shabbat. That joy reminded me of a quote from Ahad Ha-am, an early Zionist writer and thinker, you will find in Mishkan Tefillah: “More than the Jewish people has kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jewish people.”

Israel is now engaged in a war in Gaza to eradicate Hamas once and for all and to rescue the more than 200 hostages kidnapped by the terrorists. Such an operation will require, in addition to airstrikes, the introduction of Israeli ground forces into Gaza. Urban warfare entails huge risks for both soldiers and non-combatants alike. As a result, we can expect tensions to increase around the world, as they have during past Israeli military operations in Gaza. During the weeks ahead, consequently, we will need each other more than ever before. Whatever may come, know that you are not alone, that we are all broken-hearted and that, when you need the warm embrace of community, Temple Israel will gather you in with a welcoming hug.

May the Shekinah, the indwelling presence of the Divine One of Blessing, watch over each one of us in the weeks to come. May the Sukkat Shalom, the Canopy of Protection, spread over our congregation and the entire House of Israel in this time of sorrow, crisis, and war.

A Message from the Co-Presidents

Bryn Biren

Felicia Otto

The High Holy days and our Fall festivals have passed. The advance preparation for the services is incredible. It is like the culmination of the elementary school year-end show. It flows and looks like it happened with minimal effort. That is not the case. In the end, though, it is worth every bit of effort. When we look out at the congregation and are able to see the individuals who return annually for services, the people who attend on a weekly basis, and those who are here on a daily basis, we know that it is worth the effort. We are all here because Reform Judaism means something to us. It is in our souls. So many people have commented to us that Temple Israel, no matter where they live now, is their HOME. Seeing our current young adult congregants returning with their very own young children makes it all worthwhile.

What we now need is twofold. We really need people who are able to help with their time. That means joining our committees- particularly our Membership and our Finance Committees. We are looking to the future, to increasing membership and to finding financial ways to make Temple Israel’s financial security possible. We are also asking each of you to commit to a High Holy Day pledge to help us pay our constant and ever-increasing bills. Your support at YOUR level is what is important. We need support from each and every congregant. We will be reaching out to you personally to achieve this goal.

We work hard to lead your Temple. We believe in it for ourselves and for our own families. As part of our extended family we also believe that we can ask for your help.

Sincerely,

Bryn Biren & Felicia Otto

Co-Presidents

I am writing this message as I prepare to join my colleagues from the American Conference of Cantors, along with members of their congregations, on a journey to Prague, Krakow and Warsaw. Barbara Feigelman is coming from our congregation, as well as two members of my previous congregation in Brooklyn, both of whom have traveled with the ACC and me before. In addition to seeing the sites most important to Jewish history, a trip with cantors always includes lots of music. We will be participating in four concerts along our way, as well as celebrating Shabbat in Krakow as we raise our voices in song in places where Jews faced immense suffering and death during the Shoa. What better way to say, Am Yisrael Chai! The Jewish People Live!

On the anniversary of Kristalnacht, November 10, I will share my thoughts about our trip at the Erev Shabbat service. As the years go by, there are fewer survivors left to bear witness to the Shoa. It is up to us to revisit this history so that we never forget those who died and those who survived the Holocaust.

But the stars that light up the darkest night, these are the lights that guide us.

October was a very busy month here at Temple Israel.

On Friday evening October 6th and Saturday morning October 7th, we observed Simchat Torah.  At the Friday evening service, students new to our Religious School were blessed and received a gift and new members were  also blessed and formally welcomed. In addition a great time was had by all as we waved flags and danced with the Torahs to music provided by the Rock of Israel Band led by Cantor Bernstein.  The morning service on October 7th included a Yizkor Service.

Rabbi Howald and Cantor Bernstein led both Erev Sukkot Services and Simchat Torah Services with Cantor Bernstein joining Rabbi on Simchat Torah morning as well.  We thank them as always for engaging and meaningful Services. Thank you to Brotherhood and Sisterhood for providing our Festival Onegs. The Brotherhood Sundae Bar was, as always, a highlight of our festivities.  A special thank you to Linda Brill for always making sure that we have Lulavs and Etrogs.  We also thank Rock of Israel Band for their lively and joyful music.

We express our gratitude to our House Committee led by Russell Kaminsky and Alan Siegel, Custodial staff, led by Gerard Altiere, and to Justin and Angelica and to our office manager Nilaja Troy, all of whose efforts contributed to the success of these services.

We note there is a more inclusive list of all those who participated in and contributed to the success of our fall High Holiday Day and Festival services elsewhere in this E-Shalom.

Finally, although the month of November is quieter ritually, we look forward to seeing you at Friday night Erev Shabbat Services, hopefully in person (but also available on stream) and at Saturday morning Torah Study and Shabbat Services which are on zoom.  And we continue to thank Jim Rohan for his musical leadership on those Friday nights Cantor Bernstein is not here (including October’s Tot Shabbat) and also Dr. Ken Pickover for his musical accompaniment on Saturday mornings when he is available.

Please look to your e-mails, messages, Temple Israel’s New and Notes, our Facebook Page and this E-Shalom for additional information as it becomes available.

We wish all a happy, healthy and sweet 5784.

HIGH HOLY DAY AND FESTIVAL PARTICIPATION

At Temple Israel, it is our goal to share the honor of participating in services from the Bimah with as many congregants as possible.

At Temple Israel, music is an integral part of our spiritual experience.  Cantor Bernstein led the choir with our organist Elona Migirov.  The choir members are Bryn Biren, Pamela Carlton, Scott Fuller, Sam Gornstein, Judy Lee, Beverly Mazer, Judith Pessah, Pamela Rogozin, James Rohan, Jodi Siegel, Shari Stein-Ballow, Luigia Wiesner and Anne Young, and we will have the pleasure of listening to them throughout the year on selected Shabbats.  On Kol Nidre, Cellist Mary Wooten added her talent to the evening.

Several times through the holidays, we heard the sound of the shofar.  This year, the blasts were rendered by Jillian Ballow, Lee Brooks, Scott Feldman, Chad Rachman, Eric Ricci, Derek Rogozin and Su Ellen Silverman.

Our ushers help maintain the dignity of the service.  Under the direction of Nina Rohan, the ushers for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur were Stephen Baver, Terry Baver, Marnie Blit, Alan Brill, Jeffrey Chason, Dr. Larry Flaum, Barbara Fried, Joyce Goldring, Russell Kaminsky, Chad Rachman, Blanche Ricci, Inez Singer, Remy Smith, Phillip Straniere, Rhonda Trontz‑Allen and Lissa Winchel.

We are grateful for the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Howald and Cantor Bernstein throughout these services.

Another month had come and gone for Sisterhood, and the news about the Israeli-Gaza conflict has made us so sad.  If you would like to help, and I know so many of you have done so already, please donate to Jewish Federations, under the name Israeli Swords of Iron – Crisis 2023.  100% of the donations go directly to the emergency.   Your support of Israel is very important now.   There are also other reputable Jewish agencies helping Israel you can choose such as, URJ, WRJ, and Mogen David Adom.

On a lighter note, our October 15 Sisterhood General Meeting was enjoyable and informative.  Alan Brill, a cyber-security expert and husband of Linda Brill, spoke to the group about safety on the computer and phone and how to avoid being scammed.

We had a successful ACS Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 22.  Sisterhood members met at Midland Beach and walked as a group.  We have raised over $1000 so far, with donations still being accepted.

We want to welcome new members who recently joined Temple Israel.  We hope the women become Sisterhood members as well. If you see any of them, please make them feel welcome.  They are Olga Berger, Kahl and Amanda Weiss, Amanda Straniere and her daughter Abby Hart, Kara and Joe Pally, and Mark Rocke.  Returning to Temple Israel are Geri Kitoff-Lauter, and Lynn and Robert Silberman.

Here are some dates to mark on your calendar.  Our next Sisterhood General Meeting will be on November 5 at 10 am.

Brotherhood at Temple Israel continues….Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow

Thank you to those congregants who made our post-covid BBQ a success on Sunday, October 15.  We had close to 50 with members and children enjoying a sumptuous lunch of corned beef, london broil (Kevin’s secret sauce), franks, jumbo hamburgers (prepared fresh), salads, corn on the cob, french fries and soda.  Many thanks to our chef Kevin Lipsitz, our griller Russell Kaminsky, and our most essential volunteers Larry Flaum, Dennis Guttsman, and Josh Sussman. Looking forward to our next BBQ in July.  We also want to congratulate Nina Rohan for winning the 50/50 raffle and to all who added a little extra to their cost of admission.

In the coming months Brotherhood will again be sponsoring our Community Chanukah Greeting Card with original artwork by JD Lee. Please refer to the flyer you receive to join with us in sharing holiday wishes with our fellow congregants.

School is off to a productive start this year! At our October Family Shabbat service, we saw a record number of students and families in attendance and we celebrated our October students of the month. These students were named by their teachers for excellence in the classroom and they are: Akiva Astman, Andrew Berger, Hannah Brown, Abby Hart, Elliot Rachman and Rebecca Weiss. Our family Shabbat Service for November is Friday, November 3rd at 7:00pm and I can't wait to see which students will be celebrated. Our junior choir will sing at this Family service.

Our weekly pretzel sales at dismissal have been successful and due to this fundraising effort, we are able to provide the specialty challahs at our monthly family services.

On Thursday, November 30th our Annual Jimmy Max Dine In will take place from 12:00pm-11:00pm to benefit our school. A large portion of your dining room check will be donated back to our school on this date. Please mark your calendar and support the school.

Thank you to all congregants and families for being partners in the education of our youth!

Sincerely,

Felicia

Religious School Committee Co-Chair

We are sorry if your name was inadvertently omitted. Please contact the Temple Office to update your membership information.

The Sisterhood of Temple Israel would like to help you celebrate birthdays and anniversaries for you and your family.
You can share the joy of Shabbat and your birthday and/or anniversary by helping to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat on the Friday evening when we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries for that month.
In addition to sponsoring the Oneg, the names of those celebrating appear in the Friday night program and celebrants are invited to the Bimah.
A contribution of $10 for birthdays and $18 for anniversaries is suggested to honor your special occasion and help the Temple at the same time.
Letters are sent out early in the month prior and payment would be appreciated before the first Friday of the month of the celebration.

The Membership Committee met on October 12th on Zoom.

The Committee discussed having Temple Israel events advertised out in the community. We will be creating a new flyer containing general information about our Temple including the types of services we offer and the populations we serve.

Many ideas were presented including where this flyer can be placed and whether we should use the JCC more effectively to publicize events. We discussed designing a new flyer with a possible logo change that is visually appealing.  We agreed that young families look more on social media than flyers; however, we can place the flyer onto social media to capture a variety of audiences. We also discussed the need to get the information out to the community that we are the only Reform Temple on the island and that we are diverse in our membership and congregation.

We also discussed writing an article for Parent magazine in the form of a human-interest story highlighting new members and the reasons they joined our Temple.

Also discussed was creating new membership categories that can also address possible updates in membership dues.

It was noted that our committee has been given two new responsibilities. We will oversee the monthly Tot Shabbat and the Kavod Reception in the Spring.

Our next meeting is on November 9th on Zoom.

Respectfully submitted,

Avis Foundation Trustees

The mission of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation for Temple Israel Reform Congregation is:

…. to provide financial support for young families seeking membership in Temple Israel, and to attract new young families by providing learning opportunities, family programming, and social justice initiatives.

************************************************************

On November 5, the JCC Music Institute is going to come to our temple for an event starting right after Sunday school. The music teachers will perform for the children and show them the instruments they can start to learn to play.

On December 3 at 2PM, the young children can come, with their parents, to Cutest Cookies to create beautiful Chanukah cookies! Please let us know if you are planning to attend. We need to know the number of children and parents who are attending.

A reminder: On March 3rd, the wonderful woman who ran the Challah making class for us is going to do a Hammintashin class! We are thinking it will begin at 11 am and ALL children are welcome to come!

We are continuing working out a time when the older children can attend a program at the Museum of Jewish Heritage .  They are doing a program there for children about the “Rescue in Denmark”.

We hope you all attend the Family services which are usually  the first Friday of every month. Of course, you can attend all the services with your children, but this one is very important for them to come to. They can also have a part speaking during the family service. Just remember to let Rabbi know that your children would like to participate.

We continue to remind you all to volunteer for a committee. If you have any questions about which committees you might be interested in, reach out to either of us and we will be able to talk about all the committees with you!

Sincerely,

Bryn Biren and Terry Baver

The story of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation for Temple Israel

Dr. Avis originally provided our wonderful Foundation to cover a portion of the membership cost for the first 6 years for young families with young children. Our congregation had been diminishing and he was looking for a way to help us all begin to grow. After meeting with Bryn and Terry a few times, more money was added so the families would also have the opportunities to experience programs for their children. Many wonderful events have been set up for the young families including museum visits, Chanukah cookie designs, a Challah class, a program at the Staten Island Holocaust Center, and many other experiences. The foundation has also helped cover the cost of the religious school teachers.

But then!!!! Covid happened!!!!!!

So the decision was made to use a portion of the foundation money to help all the temple members. The Avis Foundation began to create the zoom classes for the adults in our congregation. These classes are continuing and the foundation covers the costs of them all. The Avis Foundation also covered the cost of the 75th anniversary event. And the foundation is now working with Judy Pessah and the Adult Education Committee to help cover the cost of all the events and classes for the adults in the congregation.

So: Our entire congregation has benefitted from the generosity of the Foundation. Thank you RON!!!!

A program on “JEWISH DIVERSITY” is under consideration, initiated with Rabbi Scott Kalmikoff’s discussion. Do you want to learn about the variety of ritual in different branches of Judaism? Would those of you in our congregation, or friends, whose Jewishness did not begin in America, like to talk to us? Would you like to hear about Judaism in parts of the world where you would not think it would exist? We are working on these ideas. Please share your thoughts with us!

We have many congregants traveling the world. Would you like to share your adventures with us? Would you like to take part in a program, perhaps—“AROUND THE WORLD IN A LIFETIME OF DAYS”? If so let us know!
