Competitive Costs Help Kentucky Rank No. 13 for Doing Business

Kentucky ranks No. 13 nationally in Area Development magazine’s 2026 Top States for Doing Business report, with competitive labor and energy costs among the state’s strongest advantages.

Gov. Andy Beshear announced the ranking Oct. 5, noting that Kentucky has placed in the top 20 every year of the Beshear-Coleman administration.

The annual report evaluates factors that influence corporate location and facility investment decisions, including workforce availability, site readiness, infrastructure, permitting, taxes and operating costs.

Construction Progresses on Park City’s Mammoth Cave Market

Construction is well underway on Mammoth Cave Market, a roughly $6 million commercial development in Park City that officials hope will begin welcoming customers early next year.

Located at 400 Mammoth Cave Parkway, the development is expected to house a gas station, liquor store, coffee shop and restaurant, bringing several new businesses to the community.

“It’s always exciting to see new businesses and opportunities coming to Park City,” Mayor Donna Scavo said.

The project has taken shape in recent months, with much of the building’s exterior structure now standing.

Clark Distributing Plans Owensboro Expansion, Opening Space for Hunger-Relief Nonprofit

Clark Distributing Co. Inc. plans to build a 26,000-square-foot regional distribution facility at MidAmerica Airpark, expanding a longtime Owensboro business while making its existing warehouse available for purchase by the Green River Community Food Warehouse.

The company plans to purchase an 11.69-acre tract for the project, with construction expected to begin by the end of 2026. Clark Distributing currently employs 45 people in Greater Owensboro, and the new facility will provide additional space to support its operations and serve customers throughout Western Kentucky.

The expansion also creates an opportunity for the Green River Community Food Warehouse to increase its capacity to distribute donated food and address hunger locally and regionally.

Ag Expo Center Could Provide Year-Round Venue, Educational Opportunities, Study Says

A draft feasibility study prepared in May 2026 by MWM Consulting says a proposed regional agricultural expo center could provide a year-round venue for agricultural events while creating new educational and career opportunities for students.

Barren County’s substantial agriculture base would provide a natural foundation for the proposed facility, featuring a climate-controlled arena capable of hosting events throughout the year.

Barren County is home to 1,621 farms, spanning around 230,539 acres, according to the 2022 Ag Census report released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Small Businesses in KY Could Face 14% Health Insurance Premium Increases in 2027

Small businesses already preparing for another year of rising employee health benefit costs could face even steeper increases than previously projected, with insurers in the small-group market proposing a median premium increase of 14% for 2027.

An analysis by KFF of preliminary rate filings from 295 insurers across all 50 states and the District of Columbia found that the median proposed increase for Affordable Care Act-compliant small-group health plans is approximately 14%. Small-group plans generally cover businesses with 50 or fewer full-time equivalent employees.

The new figures provide additional context to broader projections showing employer health care costs rising at a high-single-digit rate in 2027.
