Est. <10,000 Miles From New!

Here is a mostly original, numbers matching, very low mileage 911 SC, with mechanical updates and improvements. This car is a “barn find”, that was purchased new and imported by its first owner (Lansing, MI) in 1979 (Euro car, meeting FMVSS), then bought by its second owner (Jackson, MI) in 1982, at approximately 1,500 km (930 mi.). He drove it only very occasionally, then put it away in his barn in 1985. The current owner purchased it in in the summer of 2014, and has driven it approximately 8,000 miles since, refreshing and improving it mechanically along the way. Estimated total milage is 10,000 or below, as the previous owner switched out the European speedometer when he bought it (again, at ~930 mi.). The odometer currently indicates 8,560 miles.

It is finished in Guards Red paint, with a Cork (tan) interior. The original wheels were repainted, with new colored crest center caps and Pirelli P4 P215/60R 15 tires) The original & optional leather 380 mm Sport Steering Wheel (included) was replaced with a Momo one, and the original Blaupunkt radio (included) with a modern handsfree phone Alpine unit. Bodywork and paint (apparently original) are very good to excellent for the age of the car (See the paint meter readings in the photo gallery), with no rust anywhere. There are some small stone chips on the front of the hood, one on the driver side fender, and a few on the lower front shroud.

Sitting in an unheated barn in Michigan for nearly 30 years meant the car needed work to make it roadworthy. Starting in 2014 with new tires and battery, front brakes, the CIS fuel system, the fuel tank, fuel pump, spark plugs and injectors were replaced. In 2015, an engine-out top end rebuild and various performance upgrades were done, including new Mahle Nikasil pistons and cylinders (95mm, 9.8:1 compression, versus original 90mm, 8.5:1), Sportec head stud kit, later model valve covers, Carrera chain tensioners, all oil lines, oil return tubes and seals, SSI (300 stainless) heat exchangers, Dansk 2:1 muffler, MSD ignition and high performance coil, and new sparkplug wires were added.

The air injection system was removed (original parts included). The clutch was replaced (original and aged rubber center hub a known issue) and the transmission refurbished (with new #1, 2, 3 synchro rings and all gaskets) by Senior Porsche Technician Tim Pott (the area’s “go to” Porsche expert). All engine mount and transmission mount bushings were replaced, as were the rear axle shafts, CV joints, and sway bar bushings. All the black plastic exterior trim pieces were replaced in 2015.

A typical 911SC backfire in 2022 (on the first engine start of the year) caused a split airbox. Tim discovered a piece of plastic from the airbox had fallen into one of the exhaust ports and bent a valve. So, in addition to replacing the airbox, a second top end rebuild was done. Tim installed new updated camshafts, new manganese valve guides, new oversized intake and exhaust valves and springs, and resurfaced the heads.

In April 2023, the original rear brake lines were replaced, and the front tie rod assemblies were upgraded with the later model turbo style. A wheel alignment and camber adjustment were done, improving the front end handling at higher speeds. Tim also did a repair (replaced gear) to the odometer *which stopped working sometime after the 2022 rebuild, a common fault with of 911SCs of this period). Brake fluid was flushed. Recently (April 23, 2024) the engine oil and filter were changed, new front trunk struts added, and compression & leakdown tests were performed and reported April 26, 2024, with all specs met (see detailed results in the photo gallery).

Quick for its time (and still so), according to Car and Driver magazine’s road test of March 1, 1978, it would accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.5 sec. to 100 mph in 17.0 sec., do the ¼ mile in 14.8 sec. at 94 mph, with a top speed of 136 mph (it may even be a bit quicker now). This car was only driven occasionally a few hundred miles a year, so very few miles are likely to be unrecorded. Understanding any concerns by potential buyers regarding our best estimate of low total mileage, we can point to the condition of the seats, interior, dash, pedals, floors, paint, and underbody.

Invoices from 2014 – present for all the above work and parts are included. With all of the above work done, this car now drives and handles as it should, and will provide many miles and smiles for its new owner.
