The Porsche 944 is the evolution of Porsche’s front engine, water cooled, 4-cylinder production car, the 924 - a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen/Audi to provide a small two seater front engine rear drive sports, intended to replace the aging 914 as Porsche's entry-level sports car.

Porsche saw potential in the design and developed the car into its next evolution, the 944. They replaced the 2.0L straight 4-cylinder Audi engine, with a Porsche 2.5L 4-cylinder derived from the 5.0L V8 they were building for the 928. The fuel injection system was refined, the wheel arches were widened, and the suspension and brake systems improved. The 944 was now much better equipped and more comfortable to drive. In 1985, the model received a new dash, upgraded alternator, cast alloy control arms, and larger fuel tank. Performance was also improved, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 sec. and a top speed 130 mph. Making Car and Driver’s 10Best List in 1983, 1985, 1985, and 1986 (944 Turbo), the magazine also bestowed the 944 with the tile of “Best Handling Production Car in America” in 1984.
Porsche 944 interiors were initially carried over from the 924, but a significant update mid-way through the 1985 model year, garnering the “1985.5” designation, brought a significant redesign to the 944’s interior. The new interior featured a completely redesigned instrument panel and door panels, for a far more visually appealing “cockpit” look.
This Stone Gray Metallic & black 944 coupe is a two owner low mileage car. Factory options included Blaupunkt Monterey AM/FM/Cassette audio (158), anti-roll bars front and rear (404), side protection moldings (418), 363 mm 4-spoke H steering wheel (431), automatic speed control (454), detachable roof panel electrically openable (650), leather front seats (946), and the original light weight Fuchs alloy wheels.

After years in storage, the car was thoroughly inspected, and brought back to life. The oil & filter were changed, and the engine started safely. It was given new tires and battery, and the cam belt was pre-emptively replaced. It now runs and drives as it should. The clock even works! The body is virtually unmarked; the interior is unsullied, and the overall condition is excellent, reflectingits low mileage. This 944 has a clean Carfax, with no damage reported, and a clear MI Title. Included are the original books (owner’s manual, warranty & maintenance manual, radio manual) and an Owners Workshop Manual.

Often named by many as one of the best-handling cars of its day, the Porsche 944 holds up well decades later with solid performance, practicality, and comfort. This one is a fine example of the breed, an excellent entry level Porsche, ready for many miles and smiles.
