After an extensive international search, New York Medical College (NYMC) has appointed
Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., FACP, FAHA, FACE
, dean of the School of Medicine. An internationally-recognized expert in the field of pathogenesis of diabetes, Dr. Nadler brings to NYMC his leadership and dedication to research, innovation and education. He previously served as the Harry H. Mansbach Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine and vice dean of research at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he directed the Strelitz Diabetes Center. He also served as a member of a Special Advisory Committee on Type 1 Diabetes with the National Institutes of Health. School of Medicine Alumni Association Hosts Annual Reunion
 It was a fun-filled weekend for more than 160 School of Medicine (SOM) alumni and their guests at the SOM Alumni Association Reunion on November 10 - 11. Members of the classes of 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013, reunited for an evening of dining, dancing and camaraderie on Saturday evening at Double Tree Hilton in Tarrytown, N.Y., followed by a brunch, campus tour and a continuing medical education lecture by William H. Frishman, M.D., the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine and professor of pharmacology, who presented "The Women's Health Initiative." More than 300 supporters of New York Medical College (NYMC) gathered for an evening of celebration at the 2018 Founder's Dinner on October 14 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Tarrytown, N.Y. The fundraising gala benefits student scholarships and important initiatives at NYMC. Guests celebrated the spirit of NYMC and paid tribute to the three distinguished honorees of the evening.

NYMC Welcomes Bess J. Chazhur, M.S., as Chief Development Officer and Executive Director of Alumni Relations
Bess J. Chazhur, M.S.
, has been named chief development officer and executive director of alumni relations, bringing extensive development and leadership experience that will drive forward New York Medical College's (NYMC) fundraising initiatives and alumni engagement. Prior to joining the NYMC community in October, Ms. Chazhur was the senior director of development at Montefiore Medical Center.

 Lori Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09
, assistant professor of family and community medicine, has been appointed chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In her new role, she will lead the Department with a mission to provide quality education in family practice and generalist medicine and prepare students for today's demanding medical environment. Dr. Solomon joined the New York Medical College (NYMC) faculty in 2002 and as a family physician, she is committed to improving patients' healthcare experience and health outcomes through longitudinal, comprehensive medical care. Kelly A. Hutcheson, M.D., M.B.A., Is Appointed Chair and Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology
Kelly A. Hutcheson, M.D., M.B.A., has been named chair and professor of the Department of Ophthalmology. She also serves as director of ophthalmology for Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). Prior to joining New York Medical College, Dr. Hutcheson served as chief of ophthalmology at Sidra Medical and Research Center and Weill Cornell School of Medicine in Qatar, where she led the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology. While at Sidra, Dr. Hutcheson focused on humanitarian work, leading a team of 30 people performing medical and surgical outreach in the Dominican Republic. She also led an exploratory trip to Nedjo, Ethiopia, in partnership with Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International, providing medical and surgical care to adults and children. Rifat Latifi, M.D., FACS, FICS, Is Appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery
 Nationally recognized expert in the field of telemedicine, tenured professor of surgery at New York Medical College (NYMC) and director of the Department of Surgery at Westchester Medical Center Health Network -- Rifat Latifi, M.D., FACS, FICS, has been named chair of the Department of Surgery at NYMC. He is both uniquely qualified in the realm of telemedicine having established the first teletrauma and telepresence program in Arizona, and deeply dedicated bringing telemedicine to the forefront of global surgery. Stepping into his new position, Dr. Latifi says, "As I take on this new role as chair of surgery, I look forward to passing along everything I have learned, as well as my commitment to helping the underserved, to our students." Karen M. Murray, M.D. '99, Is Named Associate Dean for Admissions for the School of Medicine
 Karen M. Murray, M.D. '99
, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been appointed associate dean of admissions for the New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM). In her new position she is responsible for directing the Office of Admissions, reviewing thousands of applications, supporting the holistic review process, including CASPer (Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics), the on-line situational judgment test, and the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) practice, and ultimately seating classes of high-caliber, well-rounded medical students who will lead the future of medicine. NYMC Enters into New Academic Affiliation with Rome Memorial Hospital
 Broadening the clerkship opportunities available to third- and fourth-year medical students, New York Medical College (NYMC) and Rome Memorial Hospital (RMC) have entered into a new academic affiliation aimed at expanding medical education, meeting the medical health care needs of the community and further developing clinical and education research. With this new academic affiliation, RMC becomes designated as a teaching hospital for NYMC students, while NYMC medical students gain opportunities to expand their knowledge in a community hospital environment. Center of Excellence In Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters is Awarded $750,000 by New York State
New York Medical College administration and staff, local law enforcement and elected officials gathered for a press conference on July 10 to announce $750,000 in funding for the Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters from New York State. The funding will allow the Center to expand training programs for hospitals, health systems and first responders to improve responses to disasters and acts of terrorism throughout New York State.

On October 22, in a theater filled with nearly 1,000 guests, 202 first-year medical students, with pristine white coats in hand, processed on stage. Thus began the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2022 White Coat Ceremony, the rite of passage which marks medical students' entrance into the medical profession. 
The newest cohort of future physicians arrived on campus at the end of July to begin their new lives as medical students. A week of orientation activities eased the new class into their journey toward becoming physicians.
