The School of Medicine Class of 2021 Joins the College Community

The first week of August was a busy one for 216 students arriving on campus to begin a week-long Transition to Medical School program before delving into their medical studies. Presentations on professionalism, academic policies and the student honor code, social events, administrative tasks, white coat fittings, and group development and team building activities, filled the week to help prepare the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2021 for the next four years of medical education. The SOM Class of 2021 was selected from a competitive pool of 12,478 applications. The fledgling medical students hail from 26 states, with 38 percent of the class from New York, and two Canadian provinces. Fifty-six percent of the class is female and their average age is 24 years old. The future physicians represent 96 undergraduate institutions. Anthony M. Sozzo, M.A., M.S.Ed., associate dean for student affairs and director of student activities and student financial planning, spent time with the new students during the week. "I was impressed at how well and how quickly they all bonded for such a diverse group. I think they will all be just fine for the next four years as medical students and even better as physicians," he said.
