The newly rebuilt Eugene L. Friend Recreation Center at 77 Harriet Street has officially reopened!
SOMA residents and the broader community will benefit from a significantly expanded, modernized, and welcoming community hub designed to meet the neighborhood’s growing needs. Located in the SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District, the center is now nearly 25,000 square feet - more than 50% larger than the original facility. The $62 million project includes a double gymnasium with basketball, volleyball, pickleball and adaptive sports courts, an exercise room, multipurpose rooms, a kitchenette, gathering spaces, and a new playground designed with community input. Programming will include youth sports, after-school activities, fitness and dance classes, senior programs, adaptive recreation, open gym and community events.
The renovation represents a major investment in SOMA families, youth, seniors and community organizations, following years of neighborhood input led by San Francisco Recreation and Park and the Trust for Public Land. The center will continue its longstanding partnership with organizations including United Playaz, led by executive director Rudy Corpuz Jr. which operates an after-school program for local youth, while its 13 permanent works of public art celebrate SOMA's history, culture and residents. Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Matt Dorsey and community leaders joined in celebrating the reopening, emphasizing the center’s importance as a safe and welcoming “backyard” for a neighborhood with limited private outdoor space.
We appreciate Mayor Lurie’s recognition of the importance of small businesses in San Francisco. We especially appreciate his highlighting several South of Market businesses in his remarks, including SOMA Social and Saltwater Bakeshop, as examples of the vibrant small-business community contributing to SOMA’s continued revitalization.

Tokyo Moto SF, located at 1246 Howard Street in San Francisco, recently hosted a community BBQ on July 21 in collaboration with The Moto Social and Pound4Pound Grilled Burgers. The event brought together motorcycle enthusiasts and community members for an evening centered on good food, motorcycles, and, most importantly, people. Whether you ride or not, Tokyo Moto SF is about creating a welcoming community where motorcycles serve as the common thread.
Congratulations to Shawn Parker and Nansee Kim-Parker, owners of Tokyo Moto SF, on an enormously successful event that attracted well over 100 attendees and a spectacular array of motorcycles, from Yamaha and Ducati to many others. The gathering welcomed both guy and gal motorcycle afficionados and showcased the diverse and inclusive community that Tokyo Moto SF has cultivated.
And if you haven't visited Tokyo Moto SF yet, there are plenty of ways to get there - ride, walk, cycle, skate, rollerblade, or, if you can figure it out, even kite-surf your way down! However you arrive, you'll be welcomed. Just be sure to find a legal place to park, and come enjoy the community at Tokyo Moto SF.

The meeting included an update from the Department of Public Health on its newly reorganized street outreach teams. The teams are now fully integrated under DPH, with frontline outreach teams, behavioral health specialists, and expanded transportation capabilities. A new Rapid Response Team will respond to non-emergency 311 calls while continuing proactive outreach. The 311 system has been divided into geographic zones to improve efficiency, and teams will track outcomes such as whether individuals accept services, transportation, shelter, treatment, or other assistance. Members also discussed challenges with late-night conditions in SOMA, particularly around Stevenson, Jessie and Sixth Street, noting limited outreach coverage after 7 p.m. and the need for continued coordination with SFPD and other agencies.
The group then discussed conditions surrounding the Hospitality House Sixth Street Self-Help Center and a proposed letter of support to the Mayor. Hospitality House described the center as an important resource providing respite, mental health services, employment assistance, housing connections, and other support to thousands of people annually, and expressed opposition to its proposed closure. Members generally recognized the value of the program but raised significant concerns about ongoing drug use, public safety, and activity outside the facility. After discussion, the group agreed that any support should be conditional on Hospitality House providing written commitments and demonstrating measurable improvements in managing activity around the center. The group also discussed greater accountability for housing providers, the proposed “Good Neighbor” policy, and the need to address the concentration of services in SOMA. A final vote on the letter was deferred pending further information and commitments.
