Three Carolina Nursing students elected to North Carolina Association of Nursing Students Board

Carolina Nursing proudly celebrates the election of three exceptional students to the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS) board of directors. Caroline Roseman, Olivia Tseng and Rachel Wixted have been elected to serve on the board, furthering the goals of nursing education and advocating for optimal patient care.

Carolina Nursing experts join leaders across the state to tackle nursing shortage 

The North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM) has launched a new Task Force on the Future of the Nursing Workforce to tackle projected shortages and address challenges within the profession. Dean Valerie Howard has been appointed to the steering committee for this task force and is joined by nine Carolina Nursing colleagues.

Carolina Nursing students lead community health fair in partnership with El Centro Hispano

The Health Fair Experience is an integral part of the N484 Public Health Nursing in the Community Setting course developed by Assistant Professor Kandyce Brennan, DNP, CNM, and Cara Winstead, RN, MPH, COHN-S. Through this service-learning course, students gain hands-on experience in applying evidence-based public health concepts by organizing and implementing a student-led community-based health fair in partnership with El Centro Hispano, a local community organization.

Tar Heal Explorations returns to UNC School of Nursing, inspiring future nurses from diverse communities

Tar Heal Explorations is an annual event organized by the UNC SON Association of Nursing Students (ANS) in collaboration with the National Student Nurse Association's Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN) initiative. The event aims to inspire and encourage future nurses from historically underrepresented groups in American nursing. This year, Tar Heal Explorations welcomed 70 Boy and Girl Scouts from across North Carolina to Carrington Hall. 

Mobile Health Clinic receives gold rating from the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics

The UNC School of Nursing Mobile Health Clinic received a 2023 Gold Rating from the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC). This recognition underscores the clinic's commitment to providing accessible and high-quality health care to medically underserved populations.

Carolina Nursing Faculty awarded Dean’s Pilot Grant Funding  

Carolina Nursing is excited to announce that nine of its faculty members, along with their interdisciplinary teams, have been awarded funding through the newly established Research, Education and Quality Improvement Pilot Grant. This grant, which was created by Dean Howard in the spring of 2023, supports innovative research, educational scholarship and quality improvement projects that align with Carolina Nursing’s mission of advancing health for all.

Associate Professor Natalia Villegas Rodriguez, PhD, MSN, RN, IBCLC, FAAN, and Assistant Professor Susana Barroso, PhD, RN, have been named the 2023 recipients of the Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Award. The award recognizes their outstanding community service-learning initiative that aims to increase access to nursing education, research and care for underprivileged populations in North Carolina. 

Cara Winstead named Fellow of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses

Clinical Instructor Cara Winstead, RN, MPH, COHN-S, FAAOHN, has been named a Fellow of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses. This prestigious fellowship recognizes exceptional accomplishments in the field of occupational and environmental health nursing, including outstanding contributions to clinical practice, education, research, management or policy.

Grace Wu receives funding to explore disinhibited eating among North Carolina law enforcement officers

Congratulations to Grace Wu, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the UNC School of Nursing, on being awarded the 2023 SPLENDOR-NC pilot grant. This grant will provide support for her research project, The Carolina Blue Project, which aims to explore the frequency and severity of disinhibited eating among North Carolina law enforcement officers and its association with work-related stressors, psychosocial distress and cardiovascular disease.

Saif Khairat highlights cross-sector telemedicine partnership at NC Learning Forum

Associate Professor Saif Khairat, PhD, MPH, recently delivered a talk at the Learning Forum organized by the North Carolina Office of Strategic Partnerships (OSP). The event aimed to explore collaboration opportunities among government, research and philanthropy sectors, highlighting initiatives like Khairat's cross-sector partnership on telemedicine. 

Becky Hoover awarded NIH Individual Predoctoral Fellowship and Oncology Nursing Foundation Doctoral Scholarship

Carolina Nursing is thrilled to congratulate Becky Hoover, PhD candidate and Hillman Scholar, on being awarded both the highly esteemed NIH Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (F31) and the Oncology Nursing Foundation Doctoral Scholarship. Becky's NIH-funded project, titled "Incidence and Time on Onset of Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Disease in Adult Survivors of Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer and Association with Exercise," began in May 2023.

Ayomide Bankole selected for the Clin-STAR Health Equity Research Scholar Program

Carolina Nursing Postdoctoral Fellow Ayomide Bankole, PhD, RN, has been chosen to participate in the highly competitive Clin-STAR Health Equity Research Scholar Program. Funded by the National Institute of Aging and the American Federation for Aging Research, this program aims to cultivate the next generation of health equity-focused leaders in aging research.

Stephanie Betancur awarded Royster Society Lyle V. Jones Dissertation Fellowship

Lauren Hicks awarded grant to explore racial disparities in prenatal care

Congratulations to Postdoctoral Fellow Lauren Hicks, PhD, RN, on being awarded a grant from the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). The grant will fund her research project titled "Qualitative Content Analysis Exploring Racial Disparities in Prenatal Care through Patient-Provider Communication." Professor SeonAe Yeo, PhD, RNC, FAAN, will serve as a co-investigator on the project.
