Carolina Nursing students lead community health fair in partnership with El Centro Hispano


The Health Fair Experience is an integral part of the N484 Public Health Nursing in the Community Setting course developed by Assistant Professor Kandyce Brennan, DNP, CNM, and Cara Winstead, RN, MPH, COHN-S. Through this service-learning course, students gain hands-on experience in applying evidence-based public health concepts by organizing and implementing a student-led community-based health fair in partnership with El Centro Hispano, a local community organization.

Tar Heal Explorations returns to UNC School of Nursing, inspiring future nurses from diverse communities


Tar Heal Explorations is an annual event organized by the UNC SON Association of Nursing Students (ANS) in collaboration with the National Student Nurse Association's Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN) initiative. The event aims to inspire and encourage future nurses from historically underrepresented groups in American nursing. This year, Tar Heal Explorations welcomed 70 Boy and Girl Scouts from across North Carolina to Carrington Hall.

Grace Wu receives funding to explore disinhibited eating among North Carolina law enforcement officers


Congratulations to Grace Wu, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the UNC School of Nursing, on being awarded the 2023 SPLENDOR-NC pilot grant. Carolina Nursing is thrilled to congratulate Becky Hoover, PhD candidate and Hillman Scholar, on being awarded both the highly esteemed NIH Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (F31) and the Oncology Nursing Foundation Doctoral Scholarship. Becky's NIH-funded project, titled "Incidence and Time on Onset of Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Disease in Adult Survivors of Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer and Association with Exercise," began in May 2023.

Lauren Hicks awarded grant to explore racial disparities in prenatal care


Congratulations to Postdoctoral Fellow Lauren Hicks, PhD, RN, on being awarded a grant from the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). The grant will fund her research project titled "Qualitative Content Analysis Exploring Racial Disparities in Prenatal Care through Patient-Provider Communication." Jennifer Leeman appointed associate dean for research


Jennifer Leeman, DrPH, MPH, MDiv, has been appointed as the associate dean for research at the UNC School of Nursing, effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Leeman has held this position on an interim basis since August 1, 2022, and is an exemplary and highly valued member of the School of Nursing leadership team. She has been a faculty member at the UNC School of Nursing since 1998, and over the course of her remarkable career, Dr. Leeman has made significant advancements in the field of implementation science.

Ashley Leak Bryant appointed senior associate dean for global initiatives


Ashley Leak Bryant, PhD, MSN, RN, OCN, FAAN, has been appointed Senior Associate Dean for Global Initiatives and the Francis Hill Fox Distinguished Term Scholar. Dr. Bryant will also serve as the director of the School’s PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center in Quality and Safety Education in Nursing and Midwifery. With her extensive experience in building oncology nursing capacity in Malawi and her service as the interim associate dean for global initiatives since August 1, 2022, her appointment ensures leadership stability and the continued flourishing of the School’s global partnerships and PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center.
