SOPHE honored with ASHA 2021 Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Award
Washington, D.C. – July 19, 2021 – The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) today proudly accepted the 2021 Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Award during the American School Health Association’s (ASHA) Annual Conference.

The award recognizes SOPHE’s development and dissemination of the WSCC Team Training Modules and related resources that integrate education and health to improve each child’s cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. The 10-hour package of ready-made modules are designed to strengthen and sustain school health champions across CDC-funded state education agencies and can be integrated into professional preparation curricula in school health education.

The modules were informed by 28 school and district staff, an advisory group of writers and reviewers, and the staff of SOPHE’s School Health Project and CDC’s Healthy School team. Among the topics addressed are building administrative support for the WSCC framework, using data to guide WSCC planning and implementation, assessing school health needs, and healthy equity as part of the WSCC framework.

“SOPHE’s School Health Team is thrilled to accept this prestigious award and extends its thanks to ASHA’s Board and the Leadership & Recognition Committee for this honor,” says SOPHE’s Chief Executive Officer Elaine Auld, MPH, MCHES®. “As an ASHA partner in school health, SOPHE supports health educators and school health leaders by providing contemporary resources, tools, information, training, and technical assistance on relevant WSCC-related topics.”

The development of the WSCC Team Training Modules catalyzed creation of other SOPHE resources that are also free online, including a WSCC fact sheet series and a guide, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and School Health: Addressing SEL through the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Framework. A short video provides an overview of each of these resources designed to advance the student-centered framework and promote the role of the community in supporting the school, the connections between health and academic achievement, and the importance of evidence-based school policies and practices.
