November 2023

OUR MISSION:

Save Our Seabirds is committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured birds

with the goal of releasing them back to their natural habitats.

A lifelong sanctuary and specialized medical care are provided for those birds that cannot be released. We use their stories to educate the public about avian conservation.

Introducing our Social Media and Outreach Intern

John Ormsby started his internship at Save Our Seabirds in September. He is currently a Senior at Eckerd College majoring in Environmental Studies with a Biology and Art Minor. In addition to developing education programs, John participates in outreach events and posts our messages on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. He uses his art minor to create multiple outreach plans and projects to help engage the public. John has a passion for the environment and wants to use education to help inform the public about the threats birds are facing such as habitat loss and degradation.

He considers his responsibility and that of his generation to inform the general public of global change while finding innovative and lasting solutions. He is hoping to continue helping out Save Our Seabirds after he graduates in spring of 2024.

Meet Sir Fishwilliam McCormick

Sir Fishwilliam McCormick, one of our educational ambassadors, is a double-crested cormorant with a story. He was initially brought to SOS as an orphan in August of 2021. He was not able to return to the wild due to a number of developmental disabilities. Fish (as he is called) receives thorough veterinary care and orthopedic management to be sure he lives a happy, healthy and comfortable life despite his developmental challenges. Like all cormorants, he is inquisitive, clever and sociable. Fish's favorite activities include clicker training and anything involving a reward with fish! Unlike most cormorants, he is not a huge fan of water but takes short baths every day as part of his routine exercise.

Did you know? The double-crested cormorant is widely distributed across North America, from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska down to Florida and Mexico.

Flying Wild and Aquatic Wild

Flying Wild and Aquatic Wild is an educational experience at Save Our Seabirds designed for teachers and informal educators. Program participants toured the birdwalk on a bird scavenger hunt - one of the activities of the program. The program shares our mission of avian conservation and education. Save Our Seabirds partnered with Mote Marine Aquarium and the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast to raise awareness of marine conservation efforts.
