Weekday Volunteers needed at Gloucester Chamber Visitor Center

2023 Winter & Spring Registration Now Open: The NightHawks Adult Education Program at Essex Tech is offering free industry training programs in Auto Collision Repair, Construction, Culinary Arts, Electro-Mechanical Assembly, HVAC, and Welding. These courses include professional skills development and job placement assistance. If you are looking to start a new career then this could be the right path for you. The Career Technical Institute (CTI) initiative is funded through the Baker-Polito administration in collaboration with the MassHire North Shore Career Center. GMGI Scientist is Keynote Speaker for Gloucester 400+ Launch
Scientist and innovator David Walt, a founder of the nonprofit Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, will be the keynote speaker at the launch event to celebrate Gloucester 400+ this Sunday, Jan. 15.
The “Gloucester 400+ Overture To 2023” includes honoring Cape Ann’s first indigenous residents, celebrating its diversity, celebrating local talent, and highlighting initiatives to expand the city’s maritime legacy into the future. Read More

Ipswich-Rowley Rotary to Hold January Food Drive
The Ipswich-Rowley Rotary Club will be holding its annual food drive to benefit the Ipswich Community Food Pantry, a program of the Open Door, during the month of January. Needed food items include canned tuna and chicken, hearty soups and stews, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and pasta sauce, cereal, rice, peanut butter, 100% juice and juice boxes, healthy snacks, cake, and muffin and pancake mix (no glass, please). Oak to Ember Opens on Rogers Street
Oak to Ember has been in the works at the location of the defunct Cape Ann Brewing Company at 9 Rogers St. for two years. It opened to the public on Wednesday, Jan. 4, after a soft opening earlier last week.
The 120-seat restaurant features a large, curved 24-seat bar in the middle, and views of fishing vessels in Harbor Cove and lobster traps stacked along the HarborWalk. In the summer, the plan is to have 60 additional seats outside. Read More

Model ship builder, Erik Ronnberg Jr., retires from Cape Ann Museum
A ship model maker with a lifetime of achievement, Erik Ronnberg Jr. has retired after serving nine years as maritime curator at Gloucester’s Cape Ann Museum. A highly regarded model maker at a national level, Ronnberg followed in the path of his father, Erik Ronnberg Sr., an internationally known model builder. His father was an officer in the Swedish merchant marine and first mate on a square-rigged vessel, which sailed in the “Grain Races” to Australia and delivered cargo to Boston Harbor. Read More

Project Pop-Up: Detali gets extended
A Ukrainian-owned pop-up upcycled fashion shop on Main Street that was part of the second season of Project: Pop-Up Gloucester has been extended into the spring of 2023 where it plans to provide space to other Ukrainian artists, Mayor Greg Verga and city partners announced recently. According to the city, the extension highlights the success of Project: Pop-Up Gloucester, which allows entrepreneurs to test their business models in the seaport without having to commit to signing a lease or buying property. Cape Ann Animal Aid Pet of the Week
Serena is 9-month-old spayed Labrador retriever mix. When she was just weeks old she was tossed out of a moving vehicle in Puerto Rico. A rescuer took her in and nursed her back to health. She will be medium sized. She was fostered with other puppies, adult dogs, and cats. She would do best in a quiet home with another confident dogs to show her the ropes and also a home that has no small children. She is part of Cape Ann Animal Aid’s foster-to-adopt program.
