Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum to Offer February Workshop
(From Gloucester Daily Times) A hands-on “half model” workshop called “Heritage and Hulls: From a Carved Model to the Lofting Floor.” will take place from Feb. 19 to 23 and offer a deep dive into the traditional shipbuilding techniques that have been a cornerstone of Essex’s heritage for more than three centuries. National Heritage fellow and master shipwright Harold Burnham and museum Executive Director KD Montgomery will lead the workshop. Learn More

Brookline Bank collects 2,850 toys for Toys for Tots
(From Gloucester Daily Times) A bank, with help from its customers, collected almost 3,000 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign this holiday season.
Brookline Bank last week said 2,850 toys were collected at its 29 banking offices, including its branches at 10 Martin St. in Essex, 207 Main St. in Gloucester, 31 Market St. in Ipswich, and 144 Newburyport Turnpike in Rowley.
“We really appreciate the kindness of our clients, staff, and local communities in helping to make this toy drive a huge success,” said Darryl Fess, president and CEO of Brookline Bank, in a prepared statement “These toys will brighten the holidays for many underprivileged children throughout the region.”

Join the Cultural Equity Learning Community Summer 2024 Cohort
Mass Cultural Council, in partnership with Arts Connect International and HipStory, is happy to support the Summer 2024 Cohort of the Cultural Equity Learning Community (CELC). Registrations for this new cohort are being accepted through January 19, 2024. This two-unit, 12-session, asynchronous anti-racism course with wrap-around supports, is open to arts and culture workers who are committed to building intersectional racial equity. Action Inc.’s Fuel Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to help you pay a portion of your home heating bills. This no-cost program is available to eligible households through April 30 and covers all types of heating sources including oil, gas, electric, kerosene, propane, and wood. You can be eligible whether you are a homeowner, or renter, or if heat is included in your rent. Just Shy of $900K Going to Gloucester Non-Profits
(From the Gloucester Daily Times - The Mayor's Desk) Gloucester Mayor Greg Verga recently announced that "the city will be awarding several community organizations COVID Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, also known as ARPA funds, to aid in their work to assist in Gloucester’s recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic."
The nine organizations awarded funds are Action Inc., Discover Gloucester, Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Development Programs, Inc., Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Maritime Gloucester, North Shore Health Project, Inc., The Open Door, Lifebridge North Shore (Grace Center). and Wellspring House, Inc. TownGreen Offers Youth Climate Leadership Program for Cape Ann High School Students - Starts January 2024
TownGreen is partnering with The Climate Initiative, a global youth climate education program, to provide Cape Ann high school students with an empowering youth climate leadership program. The four-part virtual workshop teaches youth the basics of climate action, how to effectively communicate, what to consider when building teams, and how to create and manage projects and teams. After completing the four-part online workshop, participants are ready to carry out environmental action projects within their schools or communities by identifying an issue, creating a team, and executing a team-led solution.

The Cape Ann Transportation Authority again is offering free rides this holiday season.
(From Gloucester Daily Times) Now through New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, CATA’s bus and paratransit services — excluding On-Demand — will be free to all thanks to a grant included in the state budget and awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to the state’s 14 regional transit authorities. The 14 agencies worked together to submit a joint application and implementation plan. This is the second year this grant was awarded. Read More
